Car Door Story: Not an Open and Shut Case
OK, this experience is just so odd/funny I had to share it. I told my neighbor and she both burst out laughing and dropped her jaw at the same time.

A couple years ago I had a mechanic fix the automatic window on the driver's side of my car. When I got the car back, though, the mechanic hadn't really fixed it. It went up about 5 per cent of the time and the rest of the time it just went up to within two inches of the top of the window. I should have taken it back and complained but I didn't.

OK, so last night I knew we here in the northern Jersey area were going to get rain so I prepared for that by taking in my garden tools, adjusting the downspout on my rain barrel and attempting to roll up the window on my car.

I recall (and this is a biggie for me, 'cuz I normally don't remember things of this nature) standing there and looking at the car window, which was two inches from the top of the door. I thought that if I got in, turned on the ignition, and tried to raise the window that it would probably be a waste of time and effort. But I did it anyway--and sure enough, I couldn't get it to roll up. I went to bed thinking about the wet seat I'd have to sit in the next day.

So this morning when I got up and went to my car, I was astonished: the window was shut.

How did it get shut?!

I have no idea. My husband is in Italy. I didn't take the car out and it was locked all night long.

I told my mother and she asked if there was thunder (didn't hear any). She said that her garage door goes up and down when it thunders. Could that be it?

1. Once during an electrical storm it permanently effected my home stereo
it never was able to turn off unless it was unplugged from the wall socket.

Perhaps there was an electrical storm that caused the window to close. Hopefully you will find out the answer.

My car window had been broken out at my clients house during his annual xmas party, I had to get someone to fix it fast, found someone to come to the house to replace the window. I too wasn't impressed with the installation, however, I didn't call him back. Now I have kinda the same problem when I roll it down, sometimes it doesn't want to go back up, and I have to force it back up. Not sure if it is because of the window replacement or the window getting dirty and making it hard to roll up.

2. Thunder!
 I get a mental picture of your mother's garage door going up and down in a thunderstorm.

My automatic car window will still work even after I turn off the engine, at least until I open the door. Does your's do that? It must be something electrical, as in electrical storm? Weird.

3. hmmm, does it actually work any better now?
That's a great story. Once I had a car that started locking and unlocking doors after a really cold spell. Seriously, I could only sit there helplessly and watch this disaster. I knew it would run down my battery but I didn't know how to stop it. So, it ran down the battery. Once I got that fixed it had stopped doing the locking/unlocking bit.

5. Okay, that one's funny, too!
:D
Not that you want to watch it do that to your car of course ;)

And here I sit, with manual locks and hand-crank windows on a 2004 Civic :P
(they don't break down as much and won't run down the battery...)

4. Oooo, I love a good mystery like this!
I have no idea. My vote is fairies having pity on you! ;)

Thanks for sharing it with us, Cher. I hope that there's not a logical explanation for it; I love magical things like this.

6. The rain completed
the circuit.
There is very little tolerance between the poles of a window switch.
One drop of water would be all it takes to complete the circuit and activate the window motor.
