tends to reverse the realm of planetary influence.
Personal planets (Mercury, Venus, & Mars) whose influence is normally internalized and only shared with those with whom we are closest, becomes externalized.
Worldly planets (Jupiter & Saturn) whose influence usually predicates one's relationship with the immediate environment in terms of family, work, and community, becomes tons more personal.
Transpersonal planets (Uranus, Neptune, & Pluto) whose influence are typically projected upon the collective or larger than life energies and entities, also become more internalized and incorporated into one's personality.
Chiron (a planetoid- which I've always perceived to be a really silly term although it's quite apt, as it's too small to be a planet and too large to be an asteroid) is sort of 1/2 worldly and 1/2 transpersonl and is a bridge between those realms.
Of course, the significance and weightiness of the influence of planetary retrogradation hinges on house & sign placements, aspects to the luminaries, angles, as well as the personal planets.
But don't sweat it. Outer most (worldly & transpersonal) planets are retrograde from anywhere roughly for 1/3 to nearly 1/2 of the time so they are none too freakish. :)
There are a gazillion 1/2 baked theories about retrogradation but what I've stated is the simplist way to view it at which I've yet to arrive. My fave and most ludicrous 1/2 baked theory that I DO NOT believe is that ANYONE & EVERYONE who has a retro Neptune was once a "bad Atlantean." I read that when I was first studying and have joked about it for years. That always struck me as an especially nutty one. That would comprise far too many "bad Atlanteans" for this little sphere in my book. To make yet another sweeping 1/2 baked generalization, I think they're more than likely just amazingly imaginative.
Mercury retrograde is often misconstrued as a convoluted astro excuse for inactivity, procrastination, and paralysis, which is looney toons since Mercury is retro for three, three week intervals per year. Ahhh. . .that's roughly just under 20% of the time.
Natives of that placement are unusually deep thinkers. There are many incidents wherein, as little kids, they don't become verbal until they are able to speak in complete sentences. Instead of saying "cookie" they'll say, "mother dearest, may I please have a cookie that is 3 & 1/2 inches in diameter containing 4 & 1/4 chocolate chips"-kidding-but you get the idea.
The primary thing to avoid under Mercury retrograde is over scheduling stuff. Contracts signed may require tweaking or renegotiation, electrical and mechanical functions can be flaky or impeded and their repairs may take multiple attempts and not truly be remedied until the shadow of the retrograde has passed. It's a great time for editing, sorting through old paperwork, and rectifying old misunderstandings though.
The planet that goes retrograde most infrequently is Venus. Being a third generation Venus retro, don't even get me started about its influence. Yikes.
