Breakaway Dog Collars
There is a real potential for strangulation when a dog's collar becomes stuck on something. I read that a recent survey showed 96% of veterinarians reported having seen or heard of a collar-related injury or death within the last year. When we recently acquired a second dog I realized the danger of this happening. When the puppy came to live with us, at first I thought it was cute the way she would grab our dog by her collar and pull her around. But then I became concerned that she might get her jaw tangled in the collar and it could result in a broken jaw for her. So I did some Google searching and found that my concern was indeed warranted. Not only could she wind up with a broken jaw but our other dog could be strangled to death. I read about people who were right there when their dogs became entangled and weren't able to separate them in time. The dogs panic making it difficult to free them from one another. Often times dogs will get their collars or tags stuck on fences, decks, crates, kennels, floor vents, and outdoor plants.

Finding breakaway collars is not that easy. At least not in my local pet shops. They are readily available for cats but not dogs. I wound up ordering two of them online. If they do breakaway they can easily be connected back together. They can also be attached to a leash by their two rings so they won't breakaway during walks. I've had them on my dogs for a couple of months now. I have seen the dogs grab each other by the collar many times and the collar stayed on because they weren't actually caught and so there wasn't enough pressure for the collar to release. However, once I did find one collar laying in the backyard which indicates that while I had been inside the puppy did get stuck on the older dogs collar and it broke away just as it was intended to do. Another time I was in the kitchen and the dogs were playing. I heard a yip and when I went into the family room to investigate I found the older dog's collar laying on the floor. So once again, the collar did it's job. Of course it's best to have your dog micro chipped in case they do get out without their collar.

1. try here:
I have several of these for one of my cats in case she happens to get lost. Her name is embroidered on it along with the phone number. She has lost one of them so far (so yes, they do work). Luckily, I bought several of these when they had a sale last year.

They have sales periodically (you might consider joining their mailing list) and they let you know about it.

I see they come as long as 12" which would be long enough for some dogs.
