I had Puddycat put to sleep on Saturday
He was so sick, and there was nothing we could do to make him better. He just would not eat anything at all, and his tumors were so big, they were collapsing his windpipe. He was so weak that he could barely stand at the water dish and take a drink. I finally saw that the only thing that I or our vet could offer him was a quick and easy death. I took him in, and spent some time in a private room with him, and then the vet gave him an injection to make him sleep. I think it was too much, because after he laid down and relaxed, he gave a short gasp, and I don't think he took a breath after that. Then the vet injected the lethal solution into his vein and checked for a heartbeat. There was none. I took him home and buried him under the big pecan tree. RIP Puddycat. 2/1993 - 12/2007.

4. I do, but not here at work
At home I only have dial-up, so I'll try to post a small picture later. I did not take any pictures of him while he was sick. I want to remember him healthy and happy.

8. Here he is, this was taken last April
He was such a sweet kitty. When I got back from a long trip, he would meow very loudly and plaintively if I went outside for a minute. I guess he missed me. I sure miss him now!

9. I'm so sorry - he was a cutie pie
We lost our Simba, also an orange kitty, in July under very similar circumstances. I know how much you are hurting now. Puddycat will be waiting for you to join him someday.

17. I'm very sorry.
I lost my Bob a couple months back. He was FELK+. He became so ill...he would not eat, and he wanted nothing to do with me. He was with me 5 months longer than the vet recommended. He was barely 5 pounds when I took him.

It is so hard to make that final trip, even though you know it is the kindest thing to do.

20. So sorry - It's such a difficult decision for anyone to make
Edited on Wed Jan-02-08 04:29 PM by haele
It's such a difficult decision for anyone to make, even when you know it's the right thing to do for them. They don't understand pain or discomfort - and cats especially need their dignity and to know they can trust you.
We had to put our Willy Bear to sleep two weeks ago - he had a horrible cancer in his jaw suddenly develop, and he couldn't eat or use his toungue anymore. I couldn't stand to have him suffer, and he would not have lasted through the holidays on his own, even if we didn't have to go for a few days to see Laz's failing grandmother this holiday (it is probably the last time he will see her). I'm still tearing up every time I think of him, or see where he's buried in the back.

You'll miss him so much, and he'll always be a part of you.

Puddycat was a handsome fellow and well loved. You did the right thing to let him go, but it is never an easy decision. Remember the good times and the joy that he gave you.

23. Thanks, everyone, for your messages of support
That was one of the hardest things I have ever done. It was not an easy decision, but I think I did the right thing. I spent 14 years making his life easy. Assisting in his death was extremely difficult. I miss him terribly, but I am turning my attention to my dog, who has a large tumor on his hind leg, and needs my help too. I'm hoping and praying that this ends on a happier note. Thanks again for your support. I love being a member of the DU family. :grouphug:
