Well, pbth! my build ain't work
Pros: it's the fastest build I've done. Got everythin together in about 3 hours
Cons: the standby light on the mobo is on, but nothing is happenin: the cpu fans ain't spinnin, no video output, nada zip zilch

*sigh*

mobo requires two 8-pin connectors and a 24-pin connector
psu has an 8-pin and a 24-pin so I got a dual molex to P8 adaptor
adaptor is one cheap-ass piece-a-junk
also ps fan's not spinnin
tested psu yesterday but forgot to check whether fan spun

gotta take it apart
doublecheck the adaptor, mebbe try another or mebbe i should just get a better psu with two 8-pins and a 24-pin

3. Good suggestion. The mobo has about a dozen jumpers on it,
and websearch reveals cases where the manufacturer has shipped this board with a jumper positioned incorrectly. I checked a few of them casually but I guess I'll break out the bright lights and give it a good hard stare

2. I would try a better power supply
having to use an adaptor on the MB and the fans wont spin?? Sounds like a power issue. BTW check something, when I was building my last computer I noticed that one of the connections from the power supply snapped apart, I think it went from 12 to 8 pin (I could be remembering that wrong but one of them did come apart) see if you have anything like that coming from the PS maybe that would be your second 8 pin

4. Mobo power connectors that split 24 = 20+4 or 8 = 4+4 are common
The problem is that psus with a 24-pin and two 8-pin mobo power connectors tends to be rather expensive and high-end. I won't be needing (say) 1200w for my purposes -- so if I possibly can, I want to use a psu with a 24-pin and an 8-pin mobo power connector, plus an adapter that provides the second 8-pin mobo power connector

Wattage I've got should be more than adequate. But it could be a bum psu: it's a very popular make, and lots of folk like it, but reviews at one site I scoped are running at about 10% "arrived dead" or "died within few days"

6. I tried a different adaptor, it didn't work. So now I'll try a psu swap

7. Tried a modular psu for which I had an extra 12v 8-pin mobo cable
so I could run both mobo 8-pins off the psu directly

No dice :(

8. Yegads! tis mortal depressin t'contemplate what a blind moran I sometimes be!
Check th'effin jumpers: no dice. Switch to a better dual-moplex-to-EPS adapter: no dice. Switch to a better psu: no dice. Clear the CMOS: no dice. Pull most of the RAM: no dice

Wander aimlessly through googleland. Could this be the "this mobo doesn't post with this cpu if you got an old version with the wrong chip" problem? Could it be a bum chip? Could it be a bum mobo?

WTF? What else can I check easily?

Mebbe the mobo shortin out? Pull everything apart. Take the effin mobo out of the effin case again. Connect the psu. Double-check which panel pins the chassis power switch shorts, so I can short them with a screw driver. Wait ... wait a minute ... there's a useless pin marked NC there ... the chassis power switch connector doesn't go on pins 3 and 4 ... it goes on pins 4 and 5 ... yegads! connect that sucker! plug it it! turn on the psu! push the power switch! fans spin happily and the mobo is chattering happily to the monitor

Moral: Pins 3 and 4 are not a good substitute for pins 4 and 5
