Question about making potato dish night before
Making my own Mother's Day breakfast, I want to make almost everything the night before. Can I make my potato au gratin dish the night before? Or will the potatoes get yucky? I'm using Yukon Gold...just milk and a little bit of Parmesan, I think (from William and Sonoma brunch cookbook).

1. Do you plan to prep it or bake it the night before?
I've had day old taters like that and they were fine. I just wouldn't prepare it for baking and leave it in the fridge raw overnight.

Let's put it this way - since you're making your own mom's day breakfast, do exactly as you please! And have a happy day!!!

2. I'd like to bake them the next morning
I think I might do it anyway; I want the them baked right before serving. They'll be sitting in cold milk, so maybe they'll be ok.
Thanks!

3. Usually potatoes are fine in cold water
So cold milk sounds good. I hope you have a great day!

4. I should think you can make this ahead.
The worst that can happen is the cheese might 'melt' a bit into the milk. No harm there. Just be sure to stir it all up before you bake it.
