Poll question: What do y'all think?
I'm considering converting a chest of drawers into a potato bin. I booted my brother several months back for being a mooch and he.. umm.. abandoned the dresser still owing me a few grand.

Potatoes are dirt cheap right now and I want to buy.. umm.. too many :)

Just curious and wanted to make a poll for sport. :silly:

Happy Friday!!

:toast:

2. It is an oak (I think) - 4 drawer dresser
Good wood any how.

I planned to cut it in half, making sure I keep the 1/2 I plan to use in good shape. This will give me 2 drawers. I intend to turn the piece sideways so the drawers are "up-and-down." For the main frame I'll use the remnant piece and face any bad looking end to the wall.

I'll re-work the existing drawers to be bins that are hinged at the bottom.

Hmm... let me hunt a picture :D

It will look like this 'cept different

3. I voted no because . . . some day soon you'll be looking at your bin
and you'll miss your brother and you'll feel terrible.

Don't ask me how I know that.

4. I wouldn't convert it.
I'd just throw the potatoes into the drawers. Your brother might want his furniture back one day, ya never know.

We have a beautiful antique oak secretary that I love. The unseen lower part houses our extra spuds ;-) works out great.

7. I agree
and in any case, potatoes kept at room temperature are going to sprout on you.

If you had decided to turn his old room into a walk in, you might have a chance at keeping potatoes through winter. In a bin, forget it.

The old potato bins were useful only because people who did farm work used to eat a lot of potatoes at every meal. A half bushel hauled up from the root cellar might last a week, used up before they'd sprout.

And that old dresser is going to remind you of him. You know it will.

5. Oak?!
If you were talking crap furniture from WM or perhaps pine, yeah, but real wood furniture? Blasphemy. I say hit Goodwill and buy something more appropriate and knock yourself out. If you're halfway handy, you can turn a little pine and chicken wire into a really nice "Country" bin without the bad karma. (My brother made them for everyone many years ago--we're big on homemade gifts, but these were nice enough they still define that Christmas for everyone.)

8. Air circulation would be a problem.
I always thought potatoes need somewhere dark but with enough air to prevent molds from getting started. So I'd say no, too.

I keep mine in my kitchen closet (hopefully the door stays closed) in a plastic bin.
