About Hershey's 'Chocolate' flavored syrup, has anyone noticed
it doesn't taste so good any more?

Just bought some (so I could try to make mocha and save $ on Starbucks) and I don't think its as good as it was. Is it me, my imagination, or my memory???

They just closed down their last US plant and moved completely to Mexico.

Yeah, it's probably different and not as good.

Are there other brands you like? American-made?

(Listen to me - I just fixed myself a Sabra and cream on the rocks - well, at least Israel is the homeland for some of us..........)

2. I haven't checked other brands, so, what do I know?
PS, Israel ain't homeland for MOI, anyhow! Poland/Russia, one of them places. (I don't LIKE deserts!)

As to Sabra etc., re: food stuff, if someone does it well, go for it. As in, Belgium for chocolate; Giant sells broken up from fergit the Co, so I don't get the doves anymore.

3. Ever go to Trader Joe's?
They sell these wonderful big bars of chocolate, milk and dark, and I believe it's Belgian. It's really, really good.

Bet you could melt it and use it in the coffee drink?

I'm no dessert eater, either - give me a hunk of cheese and some good port.

Sabra and cream is a lovely late-night thing. I'm easy ................

5. I buy the dark chocolate
It's healthy, doncha know. lol. It also adds great flavor to choclate milk so it would probably be good in your mochas.

8. Homemade tastes better
The first ingredient in these syrups is usually high fructose corn syrup. So no thanks. Try these:

Hot Fudge Sauce: in saucepan mix 1 1/2 c. sugar, 2 T. flour and 3/4 c. unsw. cocoa powder. Slowly add 3/4 c. water, bring to a boil and simmer gently for a few minutes--careful that it doesn't scorch. Add 6 T. butter and stir to melt. Remove from heat and stir in 1 tsp vanilla and a dash of salt to taste. Makes 1 1/4 c.

Micro-chocolate Sauce: In microwave safe dish melt 1 c. chocolate chips, 1/2 c light corn syrup and 1 T. butter on high, one to two minutes or so. Blend in 1/4 c. half n' half or milk and 1/4 tsp. vanilla.

Caramel sauce: Cook 1 1/2 c. sugar slowly in a heavy metal pan without stirring until it melts. Add a stick of butter and stir until melted. Add 1 c. cream or milk, a dash of salt and 2T bourbon (opt.). Will thicken as it cools. Makes 2 cups.

Strawberry sauce: In blender, puree 1 c. sliced strawberries, 1 tsp. lemon juice, 1 T. sugar and 1 T. orange liquer. Makes 1 cup.

Butterscotch: In pan, mix 1 c. brown sugar, 1/2 c. corn syrup, pinch of salt and 2T. butter. Simmer 5 min. Cool 30 min in pan, then stir in 1/2 cup heavy cream or half n' half.

Micro Butterscotch sauce: In micro safe bowl melt 1 T. cornstarch, 1 1/4 c. brown sugar, 1 T. butter, 1/2 c. half n' half, pinch of salt, and 1/2 stick (4T.) butter on high 3-4 min, stirring every 2 min. Remove from heat, add 1 tsp vanilla and stir.

They suggest at 50% power using a container that doesn't get hot, so the chocolate melts more slowly. Hershey's chocolate syrup is nasty these days - HFCS is the main ingredient... blech!

If you want chocolate, have the good stuff, right?

11. Here's Alton Brown's choclate syrup recipe from his "Art of Darkness II: Cocoa" episode

Cocoa, water, sugar, vanilla, kosher salt and a couple tablespoons of light corn syrup. You cook it down on the stove then pour into squeeze bottles and store in the refrigerator. Gotta be better and more economical than Hershey's.

Anybody here remember Bosco?

Remember the straws with strips of chocolate inside, and you drank your milk, which turned into chocolate milk by the time it reached your mouth?

It never worked that way, though, so you always had to peel open the straw and eat the chocolate, which wasn't bad, either .................

It's "Flavored", it doesn't have any real chocolate in it
