storing olive oil
Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 06:21 PM by AZDemDist6
on all the cooking shows, they keep their olive oil in a bottle with a spout right? I have been watching and thinking (always a dangerous move for me hehe) and i thought I needed one since I can buy extra virgin light olive oil at Costco very inexpensively but know that it will go bad if kept at room temp too long (esp in the summer in Phoenix) or that it congeals when kept in the fridge......

so I started looking around at ebay and online and found items like this

for anywhere from $15-$25 :wow:

so i think to myself.... "Self, you own a coffee shop and buy 2-3 dozen bottles of Italian syrup a week for lattes and Italian Sodas right?" "Right" says I.

"so why don't you just clean out a syrup bottle for your oil??" "Great Idea!"

so I find a pretty syrup bottle (raspberry is what I used, just in case any flavor remained it wouldn't spoil the oil) and washed it and stripped the label.

while I still need to go get a chrome spout I'll be darned if I'm going to spend $7 bucks for this

when I can go to the restaurant supply house and get one of these

for about a buck

so here is my (mostly free) olive oil bottle

if you don't own a coffee shop, ask the nice folks at the local shop to save you a bottle (or anywhere they sell Italian Soda/Ices) and I bet they'll be happy to just hand you one :)

LOL I love it when I can feel just like Rachel Ray for free :bounce:

2. I do the same thing, but I use green bottles
Olive oil (actually most any oil) is a shrinking violet. It doesn't like bright lights. I use either wine bottles or (what I have now) a balsamic vinegar bottle. Any brown or green bottle will do. Just be sure it will take a pourer.

Tip ...... I've had my pourers clog from oil staying in them. I put 'em in the dishwasher every now and again. I also use a skewer to sorta "ream" the tubes in them.

Also, when you find a bottle you want to use, and then wash it out, be sure all the water is out of it. This may take days and days since the evaporation through the small neck makes it act like a terrarium!

waiting til the darn thing was dry

since I don't drink wine anymore.... Maybe my inlaws can bring me a wine bottle and I can use it for the better grade oil that stays around a while

I use up the oil fast LOL

or maybe I can "decoupage" it with some cute cooking pic ??? since I sure as heck am no artist and can't paint it :D

5. I didn't know any of this about olive oil...questions
I don't use it very often, and I usually buy a 1 liter bottle. What is its approximate shelf life, and how can you tell if it's gone/going bad?

10. LOL yep great price. As I have used it the last few days I find the
texture of the neck and the little inlay thingies just below the neck give me a good solid grip if my hands are slick or greasy

I am digging it :)
