Horse investigation wins honor

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The largest animal-protection group in the country is recognizing a Nebraska sheriff for his investigation into allegations that hundreds of horses were starved in the Panhandle.

Morrill County Sheriff John Edens was scheduled to be honored by The Humane Society of the United States on Saturday night in Washington.

The Humane Law Enforcement Awards recognize officers who have fought animal abuse during the previous year.

Authorities say they found 211 horses and 11 burros on Jason Meduna's 3-Strikes Ranch emaciated and suffering from a variety of ailments in April. A total of 74 horses and burros were found dead at the ranch, which is 22 miles south of Alliance.

Meduna is scheduled to stand trial in January.
