6. I'd like to hear some DU men's take on this, especially one poster
who purports to be male and often posts in forums having to do with women's rights.

11. since men in general seem to have problems respecting women at all..

...related or not - and since this disrespect and disregard is too often and too largely sanctioned by our misogynist patriarchal society - the answer is "yes".

Why?

Because we have to start somewhere in fighting the violence against and abuse of women in the US and worldwide. They are still largely treated as second-class humans or less than human in our society and too many others the world over.

It would most apropos if our government would get behind this effort as much as they got behind the effort to right racism - but being that our government is still mostly men (how many female presidents have we had? Notice the utter hatred and misogynism being shown our only female candidate - Clinton?) this isn't considered an issue, not surprisingly.

Worse, bu$hit just cut Domestic Violence funding (VAWA) by something like 120% (can't remember the exact percentage now but it was one of the biggest cuts in domestic programs in his 2008-2009 budget).

MEN will stop abusing women when it hurts THEM (the men) to do it. Make it hurt them and they'll stop. One way to make it hurt them is to make and enforce national and international laws against it. We're a LONG way from that.

They will learn to treat women with respect and to walk upright instead of with knuckles dragging when they are properly required to do so by a civilized society and by national and int'l laws.

Gotta start somewhere.

And as much as I like Judge Judy and think this smackdown of Mr. Jerk was warranted - it's also sad that we have to depend on a TeeVee courtroom judge to deliver such justice - and that we seldom if ever see it delivered anywhere else in other courtrooms or in our society when it comes to violence against women.

12. 120 million - bu$h's cuts to VAWA in his latest budget. Link here...
...it was one of the BIGGEST cuts.

http://www.nlchp.org/news.cfm?id=1

"Domestic violence programs would be particularly hard hit. The President proposed to reduce funding for programs under the Violence Against Women Act by $120 million. The President also would eliminate funding for the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Fund - a $2 billion cut. VOCA provides counseling, court advocacy, child trauma evaluation, and other services for victims of domestic violence."

I had previously said 120% (way wrong - ha!) - it was $120 MILLION he cut from VAWA.

Bastard.

13. Personally, I don't see what Judge Judy taught him.
Edited on Sat Feb-16-08 09:17 PM by Jim__
My guess is that he already knew he was disrespecting his wife when he head-butted her. That was probably at least part of the point. What he needs to learn is that head-butting someone because you're angry, frustrated, or upset with them is both a childish and a criminal thing to do.

I don't see how he learns that from Judge Judy's "lesson". He wasn't angry with his mother. My guess is that he didn't go around head-butting his wife when he wasn't angry with her. So, he probably already knew what Judge Judy supposedly taught him. The next time he's mad at his wife/girlfriend, will he disrespect her? Probably. What did he learn?

7. WOW
I'm saving that one. Every judge in the country should use it on cowards who beat women they claim to love.

8. I have to admit some trepidation going in
But this was just stunning. Way to go, Judge! Did the courtroom actually applause? It's about f*ckin' time someone figured out how to use this against these... well, I'm sure you can come up with your own terms of endearment. ;)

Wish she'd been the judge for my divorce.

15. TV justice
'because its dissrespectfull' he says... More like 'because my incest taboo programs will be overloaded and i'll do something stupid' haha. Asking him to illustrate on his mother was a good touch. And a good way for a mother to see first hand whom she has raised
