Parallel Universes - More Reality Than Science Fiction
Parallel Universes - More Reality Than Science Fiction

October 21st, 2005

As Woody Allen once put it, "There is no question that there is an unseen world. The problem is how far is it from midtown and how late is it open." Since the discoveries of the new physics, the question of the existence of parallel universes–worlds which exist side-by-side along with our own–has taken on renewed interest well beyond mere speculation.

Today, probably more than in any other day, we are facing a revolution in our thinking about the physical universe–the stuff that you and I are made of. This revolution, brought to a head by the discoveries of the new physics, including relativity and quantum mechanics, appears to reach well beyond our preconceived vision, based as it was on the concept of concrete solid reality. The new physics points in a new and more abstract direction- -a direction indicating the need to unify our picture of the world.

The major problem in science today is unification–bringing together a wide disparity of ideas and concepts ranging from the tiniest subatomic matter to the grandest galaxy. Today our knowledge covers a vast spectrum of ideas. And in our attempts to unify those ideas we have discovered great gaps. The science-fiction-like idea that our universe is not alone– that there exists in some mysterious manner alongside of ours (and this needs some explaining), other universes–is the latest concept brought forward by the new physicists in their attempt to unify our knowledge. Without the existence of these other worlds, these gaps of knowledge brought into light by the discoveries of the new physics would remain unbridgeable–incapable of being solved by previous thinking.>>>>snip

1. well, i am NOT satisfied with a theory if it...
means that maybe bush* will be impeached in some alternate universe but not this one. it's just not FAIR!

9. We just need to find ANTI-Bush in a parallel universe
and somehow bring that ANTI-Bush into our universe, and combine him with Bush... and then... POOF!

12. Or maybe it's like Star Trek and the good Bush is in a parallel uni
The evil one is here, of course. No beard...except for Laura.

14. We seem to be in the one where
Gore had a beard and so will Spock.

15. Gore or Spock don't have beards - we just have the bearded beardless Bush
Jeez, say that five times fast.

2. "What The Bleep Do We Know"
Fascinating movie which explores the world of quantum physics. One scientist in particular expounded on little particles, part of the atom, which disappear and then reappear. Where do they go? he said. He postulates a parallel universe, and laughed when he said perhaps in that parallel universe they are wondering where their particles are going when they leave and then reappear.

I highly recommend this movie not for its entertainment value, because I think the story line was rather insipid, but for the imaginative speculation and facts about quantum physics. The water crystals segment is unbelievable.

check out the web site and don't be put off by some of the "new-agey" themes if you're not into that. There's much more to it. http://www.whatthebleep.com

4. Another film
"Mindwalk", based on Fritjof Capra's work and made by his brother Bernt.

The lead male character is supposedly based on Al Gore. He and a friend tour Mont Saint Michel with a physicist and discuss the mysteries of the universe including parallelism, etc. There's a bit more Yankee-bashing than I personally like (the usual stereotypes abound), but it's primarily a good film with an interesting premise. Definitely not a movie movie, though.

5. Even "the elegant Universe" by Green touched on these aspects in physics
Of alternative universes and dimensions
I saw the "bleep" and enjoyed it,

however in philosophy, also in Hindu/Buddisht religion and quantum physics the realities of consciousness(the observer) effecting the experiment has already been documented in scientific studies that dimensions/alternative universes are very plausible even with that
paradox.

Still I thought the article was an interesting read for the novice Physicist, like myself.

6. re: water crystals--I couldn't believe it was real and that Emoto even
existed until I looked him up after seeing the movie:

It's just amazing.

8. What I thought was an unusual coincidence* is Emoto's name
Emoto sounds like a variation of "emote," which basically means to give expression or emotion to. And there he is, showing water crystals emoting, giving expression to words and their intentions.

"Thank you" to the above posters for movie references. I'll try to track them down. I have always been fascinated by quantum physics, particularly the hypothesis that no experiment is absolutely objective because everything is affected by the mere fact of observation.

*of course, there are those who believe that there are no coincidences ;)

11. LOL! The name "Emoto" was one of the reasons I didn't believe

13. Lost me at "words written on paper = energy"
http://www.hado.net/water_crystals1.html

Supposedly paper with words on it near a sample of water affects the shape of the ice crystals. But since they can't reproduce the shape of crystals anyway (by their own admission), how do they now it is the paper and the words that affect the shape?

3. I sometimes speculate about the political effects
if we were able to pass information between parallel universes.

I hear the "Al Gore wins in 2000" universes are comparatively nice, but Republicans are still jerks there too.

There could also be exchanges of scientific discoveries and general problem solving if the "Branch points" don't make the universes too dis-similar.

7. I've been fascinated by the concept of parallel universes for
several years. I LOVED "What the Bleep...." and was able to see it here in L.A. on its opening weekend where the creators held a discussion in the theatre afterwards. It was incredible! I proceeded to see the movie (I'm embarassed to say) FIVE times (people kept wantin' to go so I went along). I've since seen "The Elegant Universe" and I saw "Mindwalk" a few years ago in a college Science class. However, "What the Bleep...." (imho) was the best. I wish I'd wake up tomorrow in the ""r universe where the masses aren't pod people and there's some sense of normalacy.
