SEATTLE -- Six people were shot -- one fatally -- Friday afternoon at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle by a man who told a witness he was upset about "what was going on in Israel."<snip>

"We believe it's a lone individual acting out his antagonism," said David Gomez, who heads the FBI's counterterrorism efforts in Seattle.<snip>

The gunman forced his way through the security door at the federation after an employee had punched in her security code, Marla Meislin-Dietrich, a database coordinator for the center, told The Associated Press. "He said 'I am a Muslim American, angry at Israel,' before opening fire on everyone," Meislin-Dietrich said. "He was randomly shooting at everyone."<snip>

Local Muslims condemn "heinous act"

As news spread that the gunman at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle said he was a Muslim American angry at Israel, local Muslims condemned the violence.

They also feared the act could lead to a violent backlash against Muslims.

"Everyone's talking about it. Everyone's upset about it," said Ann El-Moslimany, a community leader. "They're upset that somebody was killed and others wounded...(more@link)

7. His religion is NOT an issue

as Islam does not condone the killing of innocents any more than does any other major religion. The quoting of what he said should be balanced (in the story) by someone pointing this out. If I burst into a cathedral, shot 6 people while declaring "I am a Protestant-American" you can be damn sure the bulk of the news story would be about how I was insane & violence against Catholics had nothing to do with Protestantism.
Yes, I intentionally used a case where religious intolerance between the two groups caused millions of deaths - to show that once passions cooled good people returned to true religious principles.

12. The guy was mentally ill--

that explains much more about what he did. He had a bizarre indecent exposure incident that had not been completely through the court system--though it is unlikely the court would have figured out exactly how screwed up he was. He had been complaining about not having a girl friend. He apparently was bipolar, but I haven't seen anything about whether he was off his meds recently.
