Republicans opposed to abortion ban lose in S.D.
Posted 6/7/2006 10:34 PM ET

By Judy Keen, USA TODAY

Four Republican state senators who voted against South Dakota's abortion ban lost their primary elections, raising questions about support for an effort to repeal the controversial state law.

"There's certainly no good news in the outcome for pro-choice advocates," Bob Burns, a political science professor at South Dakota State University, said Wednesday.

The defeat Tuesday of half of the eight Senate Republicans who opposed the nation's most restrictive abortion law banning all abortions in the state unless the mother's life is endangered - no health, incest, or rape exceptions) might mean trouble for a planned referendum in November to rescind the ban, Burns says. The other four had no primary challengers.

The results "mean that the state of South Dakota is very pro-life," says state Sen. Bill Napoli, who voted for the ban and won his primary.<snip>

Well, maybe. They certainly mean that the Republican majority are a bunch of Talibaptist nutcases.

6. But that only speaks to the Repuke side. The ones that won the primary

may very well be defeated by pro-choice Democrats. Right? And it makes their defeat all the more easier by the Democrats, since there will be no splitting of the pro-choice vote between moderate Republicans and the Democrats.

Yeah, SD is very pro-life, yet they have the Death Penalty. I wonder, too, who is going to pay to support all of those unwanted children the Talibornigans are making women have against their will.
