I used the expression "Jesus on a trailer hitch" the other day, and ever since then, I've been more and more struck with the similarities of the circus around Terri Schiavo's hospice and the people who are yelling and screaming in the town halls. They may be some of the same people, actually, now strident against government involvement in health care, back then, equally strident that the government must intervene in the private family tragedy.
Logic was never very big with these people.
But there are more similarities than just the subject of health care. They had a loud, obnoxious minority creating an uproar and spreading out-and-out lies. They had the whole of the Republican party grandstanding the issue (remember Bush coming back from vacation to sign the Terri Bill?). It got constant media attention, as if the disruptors were the real story -- grassroots fighting for the American Way, family values, all that rot.
Remember how that worked out for the Republican party? Not so good.
I have a feeling that Howard Dean's right -- when all the smoke clears, this will push the real majority of people farther and farther away from the Republicans.
