My "preemie" babies are pushing 16 pounds at 20 weeks! (pictures!)
(I'm cross posting this in the DU Lounge and Parenting forum because I think this information is important!)

Brief Recap: My babies were born at 32 weeks, 3 days gestation. My daughter weighed 3 lbs, 15.6 ounces, and was 16.75 inches long. My son weighed 4 lbs, 3.5 ounces, and was 17 inches long.

They were born on February 24, 2007, and their due date was actually April 18, 2007.

Here is what they looked like together on March 15, 2007 at 19 days old:

Then together on May 11, 2007 (when they were both in the 8 lb range):

I don't have a good picture of them together at the moment, but they have doubled in size since then!

Perhaps this will help with relative sizes --

My husband with the babies on March 22, 2007 (one month old):

Then my husband with them last month on June 17, 2007 (last month -- four months old):

Brianna at 19 days old:

Brianna at almost 20 weeks:

Cameron at 19 days old:

Cameron at almost 20 weeks:

Officially at 18 weeks old, their weights/heights were:

Brianna = 13 lbs, 13.5 ounces and 23 inches long.
Cameron = 14 lbs, 1 ounce, and 24 inches long.

They appear to be gaining about a pound a week, and about 1/2 an inch. As of their "official" four month air breathing appointment, they are OFF of the preemie growth charts! And, yes, the pediatricians jaw DROPPED when she saw how big they are!

Yes, I have "a secret" that I did not ask permission from my physician to do: I have been putting a liquid mineral supplement in their formula (1/2 tsp or 3 ml, however you want to view it) once a day ever since I stopped pumping for them at the end of April. Prior to that I was putting two tablespoons of the supplement in white grape juice and drinking it myself as part of my continuing pre-natal vitamin/mineral regime (approved while I was pregnant with much eye rolling by my OBGYN).

I have reported this to the head of the NICU where they were born at the request of some other local "preemie" parents. (I ran into three sets last Sunday/Monday, with two of them having singleton 9 month olds who weighed in the 15 lb range.) The doctor has promised to investigate, but I fear he will ignore it, despite the stunned disbelief of all the medical staff who saw them during our visit to the hospital this week. (We were there for a blood draw the first day, and to drop off the literature about the liquid mineral supplement the second.)

NOBODY BELIEVES THEY WERE PREEMIES AT THIS POINT!!! And they are ONLY 20 weeks old!!! (Yes, that is "really" a corrected age of THREE MONTHS!)

For those who care, I used "PDCM 72+" available from www.milleniumnaturalhealth.com at 3 ml (1/2 tsp) once a day. The cost is under $20 for an 8 oz bottle (240 ml). I have a non-medically educated theory as to why it made a difference in their size, but its only a theory.

In the meantime, my babies are healthy, and happy, and I am just thrilled beyond words at their wonderfullness....

:) :woohoo:

1. First your babies are stunning. Second if PDCM 72+ works use it.
I'm sure others will love to hear the advise.

3. I hope so! I think it is making a difference, and I hope the doctor investigates!
In the meantime, I hope other preemie parents find out about it, and it helps them, too!

4. they look terrific
As an uncle of 3 preemies, they look great! Also, did you happen to take a look at my sisters book? I posted the info at the parenting forum. It has oodles and oodles of info on how to raise preemies! Lots of preemie parents LOVE that book.

7. It's great that they appear so healthy but ...

What are the long term effects of what you are adding to their diet ?

Some things produce wonderful results in the short term but over time can have negative consequences.

That's why there are scientific and medical studies performed and follow-up tracking of drugs. Though obviously not as much and as well as should be.

9. Don't know. I learned about it from a nutrition lecture, and cleared it
with my OBGYN during my pregnancy. I continued to take it while pumping. I am a programmer, with a clear understanding of "garbage in/garbage out" which is leading me to the following theory:

The "trace" minerals in this product are ones we all ingest normally in the course of eating a normal "healthy" diet. During pregnancy these minerals cross over to the baby(ies), but with preemies, they lose time in the womb and thus lose the trace minerals from their mother (but probably get some through breast milk). Formula fed babies probably get less. Anyway, when the preemies start eating "real food", then they start getting the "trace" minerals and their growth catches up.

If this theory is correct, then I just short cutted the process by getting them the trace minerals early.

Again, I'm just a programmer and not a trained medical person. I have provided all of the information to the head of my NICU, and the company that supplies the product is sending him a free sample. We were told to give the babies 1 ml of a liquid poly vitamin per day, and 0.2 ml of a liquid iron supplement, and continue to do so. This particular supplement is simply the rest of the minerals. Their growth and health is AMAZING and, as far as I know, unprecedented.

Only testing will determine if this is a possible way to enhance the health of other premature infants. I hope it is....

12. Beautiful! I love to see such healthy babies.
My granddaughter was 2# 7 oz. when she was born 23 years ago. It took her a while, but she fought her way through 3 months in the hospital and finally reached her 5# goal to be released. She just finished college last year.

Good luck to your precious babies.

13. OMG, Ida, they are too gorgeous for words!
Who needs sleep when you can spend all your time with these big, beautiful babies? Their size is amazing. They look like they're fully 5 month old instead of their gestational age of 3 months. And how lucky they are to have IdaBriggs for a mommy.

many hugs to you and the twins! :pals:

hedda

14. Congratulations
It's great to see that they are so healthy. My brother and I were born about six weeks premature, and we both have very skinny frames, though I think that has more to do with our genes, looking at our father and our maternal uncles. I hope your OB/GYN gives proper consideration to the supplement.

16. Awww, they're so lovely!
Congratulations! And good for you on going with your gut and doing what you felt you needed to do. Its so easy for us moms to blindly trust others and ignore our instincts.

And looking at those sweetie faces makes me wanna forget that my 18mo old has decided to stop eating and sleeping, and just go have another already!

17. I remember early in your pregnancy
you were concerned about if things were OK and you posted on the Astrology & Spirituality forum. I knew (and wrote) that things would all work out well but this is the first time I have seen the beautiful outcome.
Congratulations and warm welcome into the world to Brianna and Cameron.

May we grant them an ever healing country and world.

Joy
