UW Newspaper Editor Defends Man-Sheep Illustration

Sarah Jeglum, editor of the University of Washington's student newspaper The Daily must be auditioning for a position at the World Net Daily or something. First, she made the decision to publish an op-ed that supported Proposition 8 by comparing gay marriage to bestiality along with an illustration of a man and a sheep.

Now, with students protesting the paper today and demanding the Daily staff should take sensitivity training, Jeglum's response is to tell the Seattle Times that she "thinks staff members are doing a better job of producing balanced and ethical journalism than at any time in her four years at The Daily."

What was she doing before? Putting illustrations of black people and monkeys next to op-ed's on evolution?

Does she not get it or is she just playing stupid? In this age of global communication, anyone's views are valid as the next person's, but as an editor, Jegelum's decision to include the bestiality article and illustration in the school's paper was inherently says that she believes the argument rises above deragatory homophobia to be a valid criticism. If she isn't going to apologize, despite the fact that the University of Washington Graduate and Professional Student Senate passed a resolution this week demanding she do just that, at the very least, she needs to offer up a better reason for why she included the piece than "I felt like it."

If you're attending the protest today, we'd love to hear your reactions in the comments

1. She just wants animals to have the ability to sign legal documents.

Closet animal rights activist Sarah Leglum, advocate of man sheep marrage, announced recently her new efforts to unionize movie animals. Publicists for Benji, Bonzo, and Lassie refused to comment. While Flipper said,"Ack Ack HAHAHAHAHA" and demanded more fish. :smoke:

3. Why is it the bigots who always compare Homosexuality with Bestiality turn out to be bestialics...
...themselves? Sounds like some sick bastards are jealous of people who always wind up dating a hot person of the same gender, while they always try to hit on the neighbor's dog due to their poor social skills. Or maybe her boyfriend thought she was a total bitch and would rather have a relationship with a guy then deal with her pissing and moaning on a daily basis.

so what you're saying is that we all have to suffer through two more quarters of your horrific editorializing? that's just plain fucked up.

on December 5, 2008 at 7:48 a.m. free speech doesn't entitle you to print hate speech sarah. you cannot fall back on the first amendment as a crutch for you to continue your war on gays.
.......
your voice is not my voice and the daily does not now (or ever) speak for me. i despise the things you've had to say and i look forward to the time when you are no longer able to use the pages of the daily to promote hatred and bigotry.

6. I'm a little bit conflicted.
It does seem that the opinion page of a newspaper is the place to share differing opinions, even if they are unpopular. I support the newspaper's printing of the anti-gay *article,* although the picture was over the top. The proper way to deal with something on the opinion page we dislike is to write to the editor to that effect.

FWIW, the student leader who organized these rallies is a friend of mine. I don't agree with everything he does, but he did a good job here.

7. Had the article been about opposition to affirmative action, would it have been appropriate
To include a similar illustration where the sheep is replaced by a tree with a noose hanging from it?

At issue is the association, made deliberately by this editor, of the lie that homosexuality is, somehow, in the same category as bestiality.

I will agree with you about the article itself, as distasteful as it was. I cannot agree with you about the illustration. It and the associations it made were highly offensive, bigoted and inexcusable.

8. Isn't bestiality usually a heterosexual orientation activity?
Or are the men "making love" to male sheep and the women "making love" to female horses? The legendary 'donkey shows' of the 70s performed by impoverished rural (usually underaged) females... I'm pretty sure it was a boy donkey and it wasn't arranged by lesbians and I'm almost certain the people who bought tickets were largely straight men. But, hey, who knows?
