Catholic leader sought Mormon help on Prop 8

(12-04) 18:36 PST San Francisco, CA (AP) --

San Francisco's Roman Catholic archbishop says he invited leaders of the Mormon Church to get involved in the campaign to pass a gay marriage ban in California this year at the request of his fellow bishops.

Archbishop George Niederauer wrote in a column to be published in a diocesan newspaper Friday that he wanted to address the "many misunderstandings and hard feelings" resulting from Proposition 8's adoption.

It's the first time the archbishop has commented on how churches organized to help push through the initiative, which overturned the California Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex nuptials. Mormon leaders had given a similar account of how its members, who represent about 2 percent of the California residents with a religious affiliation, came to play such a prominent role in promoting Proposition 8.

Niederauer said that after the state's Catholic bishops endorsed the measure, staff from the California Catholic Conference told him the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had actively supported a similar ballot initiative eight years ago.

Niederauer, who previously served as bishop of Salt Lake City, said he sent a letter to Mormon leaders.

"I did write to them and they urged the members of their Church, especially those in California, to become involved," he said.

By some estimates, contributions from Mormon supporters accounted for 45 percent of the $38 million raised by the Yes on 8 campaign.

In the month since the election, Mormon temples around the country have become targets of protest, and some gay rights activists have called for a boycott of Mormon-owned businesses and even the entire state of Utah.

Niederauer also defended the active involvement churches played in the campaign, saying "religious leaders in America have the constitutional right to speak out on issues of public policy."

Niederauer said that while he knew many gay people felt "hurt and offended," both sides "need to be able to disagree without being disagreeable.

5. The catholics and the mormons getting along?
Get ready for the apocalypse! The gays should be proud that they have united the centuries old foes:sarcasm:. Keep up the mormon boycott, and if we can figure out anything the catholics produce, other than religious paraphernalia and guilt, boycott that too. Niederauer speaks with a forked tongue, and he looks like such a jolly old fuck.

On a positive note. At the 5th Annual World AIDS Luncheon yesterday, the Reverend David Strong spoke with compassion, support and humor. All religion isn’t a plague just some of it.

14. Heavily Catholic Poland is virulently, near nazi-like,homophobic and Church does nothing

..........
Text of European Parliament Resolution Condemning "Homophobia"

P6_TA-PROV(2007)0167

Homophobia in Europe
European Parliament resolution of 26 April 2007 on homophobia in Europe

G. whereas in its above-mentioned resolution of 15 June 2006, Parliament has already expressed its serious concern at the situation in Europe and notably in Poland, condemning the declarations of incitement to hatred and violence by the leaders of the Party of the League of Polish Families and, notably, by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education,

H. whereas in March 2007 the Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education announced draft legislation punishing 'homosexual propaganda' in schools, and illustrated its content, which is to provide for dismissing, fining or imprisoning school heads, teachers and pupils in the event of LGBT rights 'activism' in schools,

I. whereas the Polish Deputy Minister for Education confirmed that the administration is drafting such legislation and declared that 'teachers who reveal their homosexuality will be fired from work'; whereas various members of the Polish Government reacted in different ways, leaving it unclear whether the legislation will in fact be proposed,

J. whereas the Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education has expressed a desire to promote the adoption of similar laws at European level,

K. whereas the proposed legislation received the support of the Polish Prime Minister, who declared that 'promoting a homosexual lifestyle for young people in school as an alternative to normal life goes too far, and that these kinds of initiatives in schools have to be stopped', thus presenting a distorted interpretation of education and tolerance,

L. whereas the Polish Ombudsman for Children has stated that she is preparing a list of jobs for which homosexuals are unfit,

M. whereas in June 2006 the State Prosecutor's office ordered checks on the funding of LGBT organisations in connection with 'criminal movements' and their presence in schools, in order to find traces of criminal activities, without any result,

N. whereas on 8 June 2006 the Polish Government sacked the head of the Centre for Teacher Development and prohibited the distribution of an official Council of Europe anti discrimination manual, and whereas the new head of the Centre stated on 9 October 2006 that 'improper patterns must not be present in schools, because the objective of school is to explain the difference between good and evil, beauty and ugliness… school must explain that homosexual practices lead to drama, emptiness and degeneracy',

11. Meddling with public policy is the role of churches? Morality yes, but policy?

>>"Niederauer also defended the active involvement churches played in the campaign, saying "religious leaders in America have the constitutional right to speak out on issues of public policy."<<

Yes, anyone can speak out as constitutional right, but not everyone is tax exempt as they are, and shouldn't be.

17. It's funny to see the Mormons working with the Catholics, because...
the Mormons believe that Catholicism is a false religion. But I guess that just goes to show that when it comes to denying GLBT's basic humans rights, the Mormons are willing to get in bed with the devil.

20. Exactly. And that's an insight into how little engaged the leadership is
of both groups with the tenets of their "faith". They're business men. Neiderauer networked with the Mormons while he "served" in Salt Lake. This was a business deal and that's all it was.

WHY anti-Catholic sentiment runs so high on the LGBT forum. I don't care what these assholes believe, I care that they choose to take their hate public and incite their followers to vote against our civil rights.

21. Maybe this was a plot by the Catholic Church to bring public condemnation on the Mormons.
So far, the Mormons seem to be taking most of the heat for the efforts to deny people's rights, while the work of the Catholics and non-denominational fundamentalist Protestant churches go largely unnoticed.
