Seattle's gay and lesbian chamber of commerce is enjoying a significant increase in corporate sponsorship that is adding to the gay community's already growing economic -- and political -- clout.
Through the first five months of this year, the 921-member Greater Seattle Business Association has secured $150,000 in corporate sponsorships, a level approaching double last year's take of $87,500 and is nearly triple 2004's $51,500.

"It just makes perfect business sense to say this is a community I want to market to," said association Executive Director Louise Chernin. Because gays and lesbians typically have more disposable income, are more likely to own a home or business and are widely seen as loyal to supportive companies, sponsors are increasingly wanting to reach them, Chernin says.
This year, gay and lesbian buying power is projected to top $640 billion, according to an analysis by Witeck-Combs Communications and Packaged Facts. That spending power is on par with African Americans, Hispanics and Asians. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/12793917/OK ... 'fess up! Which one of you is using my buying power? ...
