Kraft Fends Off Attempt To Dump Gay Games

(Chicago, Illinois) Shareholders in Kraft Foods have overwhelmingly rejected an attempt to force the company to drop its sponsorship of this summer's Gay Games.

A resolution calling on Kraft to drop its sponsorship for the Games and future gay events received only one-per cent of the votes at the company's annual meeting this week.

The vote was forced by Dr. Marcella Meyer of Chicago, a shareholder in the company, who objected to Kraft's participation in the games.

Meyer said that the Gay Games promotes "homosexual activity" that would increase the transition of HIV/AIDS and other STDs. According to Myers the company's sponsorship is inconsistent with its health-focused initiatives.

To educate Dr. Meyer, the Gay Games are basically...the Gay Olympics (except that the United States Supreme Court, in a truly lunkheaded decision, ruled that "The Gay Olympics" cannot be used). They are a week long event where gay and lesbian athletes from all over the world compete in track and field, swimming, diving, weightlifing...Olympic sports. No, Dr. Meyer, there isn't gay/lesbian sex performed...in spite of what boneheaded attitudes you may have about us.

This is a tangent, and has nothing to do with whether or not they sponsor the Gay Games. I'm happy for any sponsor the Gay Games can get. But that line about health focused initiatives just made me laugh.
