Czech gay couples may get rights

The upper chamber of the Czech Republic's parliament voted Thursday to grant some legal recognition to same-sex couples.

The Senate vote was 45-14 in favor, with six senators abstaining, the Associated Press reported.

The legislations, which must be approved by President Vaclav Klaus, would grant many marriage-like rights, such as inheritance and health care privileges, to registered same-sex couples. The rights do not include adoption of children.

"It's a great encouragement for us," said Jiri Hromada, a leading gay Czech activist.

If the president approves the measure, the Czech Republic will become the 13th European nation to offer legal recognition to same-sex couples.

Yeah, I always thought of those Eastern European countries as oppressive and conservative, and yet now we have this! Way to go! It boggles the mind that countries like the Czech Republic and South Africa have more respect for their gay citizens than the great USA!
