Barbie 'Promotes Gender Confusion' Conservative Group Claims
http://www.365gay.com/Newscon06/01/010306barbie.htm

A conservative group claims that Mattel's popular doll Barbie is promoting gender confusion among children. Concerned Women for America says that because the company's website for the doll asks children their sex Matell is giving in "to the homosexual agenda".

"It’s the idea that well, maybe people aren’t born a particular biological sex, or they are but that shouldn’t determine their gender identity," said Bob Knight, the director of CWA's Culture & Family Institute. "And that’s a very big component of the homosexual activist agenda now."

"In other words, any kid who’s not sure about who he is, he’s fair game to try to persuade to have same sex acts," said Knight.

The Barbie Web site is free and the only area where children are asked to register is in an area called "My Backpack" where kids can sign up to receive birthday greetings.

is anyone else confused?

1. I was more confused by the lack of nipples and genitalia on the dolls
But otherwise I turned out more or less okay, gender/sex identity-wise.

It's weird how fragile certain elements of the Right judge their own sexual identities to be. Hmm...

5. that's what I thought the article was talking about before I read it
asking for a child's sex on a questionnaire?

I'm guessing that's to keep future emailings gender specific

2. I'm scratching my head on this one....
I'm thinking groups that normally had many screws loose to begin with seem to be trying to repair themselves with silly putty.

very weird. I just have to say that when fundies are so obsessed with "gender confusion" that they attack cartoon characters and toy dolls, its like the seventh sign of the plastic apocalypse.

6. I can see why Ken would be confused, since he just has that smooth
little hump there rather than genitalia.

31. there's a question here

http://barbie.everythinggirl.com/activities/friends/bac...

The options are actually "boy", "girl" and "I don't want to say"

Maybe CWA is talking about a different area or the site changed it already. Regardless, however, what a stupid thing to be up in arms about.

*I* didn't have to look really hard to find it, because my daughter sometimes plays with this site, but it still took a little bit of searching.

12. These wing nuts throw a lot of stuff at us

In fact, they throw out things that are outragious to the point of being insulting. When I was four or five if I saw a questionnaire that said, "Are the a A Male, B Female or C Don't know, I'd have marked C because I didn't know what Male and female were, I was a little boy, the two weren't connected in my understanding of genders, I knew more common words like man, woman, girl, boy, prince, princess, queen, king... ones that imply a gender identity but not the idea of gender identification in that capacity.

This doesn't enable or encourage homosexuality. Especially when Barbie digs on a guy who's built like a ken doll. (Drum Rimshot) It just shows that size isn't everything.

On edit - Checked the side and you are right, it said Boy, Girl and I don't want to say - Nothing wrong with that, in fact it offers protection for the really paranoid.

Personally I'm more concerned about the reflection of the 'teen trends' where the theme song keeps using the words Ho and Hos, a possible implication that mattel wants women to be mindless sluts because they hear the dolls they play with are 'hos' and this will have lasting repercussions :sarcasm:
