Penn State Denies 'Lesbian Baiting' Charge

Penn State women's basketball coach Rene Portland said Wednesday that a former player's departure from the school was purely basketball-related, firmly denying that any racial discrimination was involved.

Portland, who earlier rejected an accusation of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the same case, issued a statement saying that she "categorically and emphatically" denied the allegations.

"My career has been built on treating all Lady Lion players with respect," she said. "I will continue to do so."

environment that an anti-gay bias exists.

My personal experience was during a lacrosse tournament. My daughter's team (NYU) was playing Penn State and several PSU players on the sidelines spent a great deal of time commenting (negatively) about one of THEIR OWN teammates who they believed was gay.

They obviously felt that it was okay to talk like that in public. They obviously live in an environment where education and tolerance is not emphasized and that kind of hatred is encouraged.

I felt sorry for the object of their scorn. With teammates like that, I can only imagine what the young woman must put up with from the rest of the campus population.
