White House Denounces NC Marriage Bill
White House Denounces NC Marriage Bill

White House spokesman Shin Inouye has issued the following response to North Carolina's proposed anti-gay marriage amendment.

“The President has long believed that gay and lesbian couples deserve the same rights and legal protections as straight couples,” Inouye said. “That’s why he has called for repeal of the so-called ‘Defense of Marriage Act’ and determined that his Administration would no longer defend the constitutionality of DOMA in the courts. He has also said that the states should determine for themselves how best to uphold the rights of their own citizens. Inouye continued, “While the President does not weigh in on every single action taken by legislative bodies in our country, the record is clear that the President has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same sex couples. The President believes strongly in stopping laws designed to take rights away.”

6. You're right
Bush didn't adopt segregationist states' rights rhetoric to appease fundamentalists. He merely went whole hog on a constitutional amendment.

So, sure, President Obama is much better in that regard.

"States rights for civil liberties!"

Yeah. Just . . . yeah.

18. And how exactly has Obama been "better than Bush" for North Carolina human rights?
I'm sitting here in North Carolina watching my state make me a permanent second class citizen with very few rights, and Obama keeps giving speeches in which he says that it's up to the states to determine human rights.

How exactly is that a whole lot better than Bush on this particular issue? This is a serious question. I know that Obama is a lot better than Bush in a lot of other regards, but on this particular issue - the one that is the point of this OP and to which you are responding - I'm not seeing a big difference.

20. The difference is Bush did nothing while Obama had one of his people have one of HIS people
write this damning declaration. So much better than direct involvement by the President actually taking the issue to the bully pulpit....don't you think?

16. The repeal of DOMA won't undo constitutional amendments.
The only remedy for all these constitutional amendments denying equal rights to a minority group would be for the Supreme Court to find them all unconstitutional, and that will never happen as long as Democrats like Obama keep telling us that it's fine to leave human rights up to the states.

7. People seem to enjoy swallowing the lie that Obama has "long supported" gay equality
He does not. When he supports marriage equality, maybe then. Until then, he's just another "soft bigot", because his god is in the mix.

8. Is anyone else tired of good news on the GLBT front always being used
as a pretext to slap the ungrateful fags around again?

It got old a long time ago, and seeing it done here in this forum is worse, somehow, but there it is.

FWIW, I am happy to see this statement from the White House. I came to this thread just after you posted it to say so but found that someone had already dropped a turd in here.

I did rec, though.

Go back to your 1200 thread count sheeted bed, slip into a nice, brightly-colored cocktail, and put on Judy. There is no need to reach for the smelling salts or aim for the divine fainting couch in your immaculately decorated parlor. Don't forget, there will a tea dance, just days away, where you can dance out all your troubles.

;)

Homophobic bullying is SO MUCH MORE than calling someone a fag/dyke, and hopefully, one day, people will start to fucking see it!

14. Did you find the "out" clause?
If not, here it is: "Inouye continued, “While the President does not weigh in on every single action taken by legislative bodies in our country..."

As an amateur linguist, I really think a new language should be declared: politicianese!

You've gotta be fucking kidding me. What about his DOJ comparing same-sex relations to incest and pedophilia? What about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJhQBZ1La0w">this gem that he repeated when asked about Prop H8?

One of Obama's minions made a statement saying NC was wrong to do what Obama gave tacit approval of with his "State's Rights" rhetoric. I'm sure the powers-that-be of NC are feeling thoroughly chastised right now.

23. Obama never apologized for his DOJ brief calling GLBT "perverts:"
Rev. Rick Warren & "ex-gay" Donnie McClurkin were strong early indicators of his true feelings toward GLBT people. I don't trust Obama.
