Iowa Senate Dems vote down push for gay marriage ban

A motion by state Sen. Kent Sorenson (R-Indianola) to suspend the Senate’s rules to allow a vote on a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage was defeated early Thursday morning on a party-line vote.

Sorenson asked all 50 senators to call up Senate Joint Resolution 8, a bill that would amend the Iowa Constitution to specify that marriage between one man and one woman is the only legal union valid or recognized in the state. Senate President Jack Kibbie (D-Emmetsburg) said “no,” but agreed to allow a vote on whether to suspend the rules and override his objection.

Twenty-six Democrats voted “no” and 24 Republicans voted “yes.” The motion was defeated.

Danny Carroll, chairman of the controversial Christian organization The Family Leader, told supporters in an e-mail Wednesday night that Sorenson was planning to “file numerous amendments and use any other tactic at his disposal” in order to force a vote on same-sex marriage. Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal has vowed to never allow such an amendment to come up for debate

2. Good
I just LOVE how fundies and Rethugs love to dream up ways to make life harder and nastier instead of happier and more pleasant. Hateful bastards. Glad to know it was voted down.

3. I hope we make it through another election or two.
I'm afraid they aren't going to give up on this for a while. If they regain control of the Senate they definitely try to push that shit on us.

Maybe after a few years they will tire of it and/or the public will finally realize that giving gays hasn't hurt them in any way and this can be put to rest.

4. It has to go federal !
We don't really have ANY equality until we receive the same tax breaks etc. on a federal level.
The federal government has to recognize same-sex marriage.

5. Indeed, the more we delay this the better our chances of blocking it
The longer we fight and successfully stop them from putting a gay marriage repeal on the ballot, the harder it'll get for the bigots to actually pass their gay marriage ban in a vote.

The anti-equality foes know that the longer it takes to get a gay marriage ban on the ballot the harder it'll be to pass. Every year support for marriage equality picks up 1 or 2 percentage points nationally on average.

Worse yet for the anti marriage foes, Nate Silver analyzed some state by state polls on support for gay marriage in all 50 states over time. He found that once gay marriage support hits a certain point (I forget the number, it's around 50% I think) support for gay marriage tends to rocket even farther upward at a more rapid pace, until it's firmly the majority opinion (over 60% support) then it slows down again.

7. These filthy Repukes in my state ALL campaigned using the
"It's the economy, stupid" theme, in order to sweep into office, and then turn around and go "all in" with the anti-gay bigotry. What a naked and pathetic admission that they've got absolutely nothing, in terms of policies that may actually benefit Iowans in real terms.
