Would any viewers of The L Word from Season 2 like to comment?

I was disappointed. I thought the first season dealt with serious and important issues (Like episode 11 and the wing nut fundie that Bette Porter had to deal with) and I thought the second season drifted into triviality (other than the issue of the scumbag Mark and his video rape of his roommates).

1. The show is

in the end, like Queer As Folk, a modified version of a soap opera. It's about human relationships--and, as we saw--there is little difference between the relationships of straight people and those of gays and lesbians. We all suffer the same doubts, fears, and pain.

It doesn't have to be overtly political--in fact, I think it's better to keep that on the down-low. It's about people, not politics.

What Mark did was fucked up, of course, and both my wife and I winced when he caved in to his buddy and did it even though he knew it was wrong. He played to the least common denominator, when what he originally wanted was to play to the greatest common denominator and create a documentary that could possibly be used to promote understanding.

The road to hell and all that.

Anyway, that's my take on it.

2. The finale was the most disappointing of all.

There was nothing "shocking" about it, in contradiction to the way it was advertised.

Plus--and I'm sorry, I know it's an important thing to see in a GLBT context--but the "we're having a baby" plotline is just tedious at this point. It's not the L Word's fault--QAF just got there first and beat it to death.

Plus, the most disappointing thing of all--they're turning Shane into a dork. I almost couldn't believe it when she went up to Carmen and started talking about a puppy she had as a child. Again, another throwback to QAF--she's becoming the L Word's Brian Kinney, the "ungettable," emotionally closed-off player who ultimately shows her heart of gold. Bleh.

3. Yea but I thought the first season was great....

And unlike the other poster, I do believe it is important to deal with issues beyond the soap opera level, especially on GLBT issues.

But yea, I think the second season was highly disappointing, although I don't have a fetish or adoration for any of the characters in particular I just wanted to see these people and their interactions with the world. I think they should have made them less insular and mixed them more generally with straight society because I don't think any gays I've ever been around (I'm straight with a history of gay friends) are so isolated that they "hive" together like that.

That's the other thing I would love to be able to get a comment from a lesbian on...it just didn't ring true to me.
