Tammy Baldwin named honorary inaugural co-chair
Tammy Baldwin named honorary inaugural co-chair
By Jennifer Vanasco
12.22.2008 5:08pm EST

President-Obama is nothing if not politically savvy.

Perhaps as a bone to gays upset over Rick Warren’s invitation to give the opening prayer during the inaugural ceremony, the openly lesbian Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) has been named one of 15 honorary co-chairs of the inaugural committee.

Of course, honorary co-chairs are just that - honorary. They don’t do anything. Their names are just on the stationary.

In other Warren news, Katha Pollitt points out that Warren has also disrespected Jewish people -they will burn in hell, he has said - and that Muslim leaders should basically be killed for being “evil.”

Do you think that once Warren’s anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim views become more widespread, Obama will stop defending him?

2. That's actually insulting. I wish Baldwin would have told Obama to go pound sand.

4. We call that window dressing!
When Congress passed the 1965 Civil Rights Act, Blue Cross-Blue Shield hired a Black man and put him on a desk right inside the door to the personnel department to greet people as they came in, this was their way of saying they didn't discriminate. He was the only non-white in the company!

5. Hmm. I wonder if this fits more into "not as smart as we thought" or "just doesn't care."
I'm pretty sure it's one or the other, and I was leaning towards the latter. This has got me wondering if this Warren thing really was just a tremendous fuck-up and Obama didn't expect us to get this riled and thinks that this will get us to calm down, because if he's a political whiz kid then he should know full well that this latest move is not going to change anything.

If he really is just this fucking tone-deaf, here's hoping he learns a lesson from this whole mess about not biting the hand that works its ass off to get you elected.

6. Obama is vacationing in Hawaii, oblivious or uncaring about the repercussions to the Warren pick
Must be nice not to have to worry that one's marriage will not be invalidated, or that one's kids aren't going to be taken away to be given to a "traditional" family.

7. Let's compare: An honorary position without even pointless ceremonial duties, and...
... a well known homophobic bigot being given international air time at one of the biggest, most important and almost certainly most viewed media event of last century or this.

I don't see much of a balance.

18. Totally!
Like, I never get stared at when I go to majority white Pagan gatherings anymore or get into arguments about cultural appropriation. Nor do I have to stop calling white feminists on skewed cultural persepectives anymore. It's amazing!

But I had no idea my girlfriend was such a white devil until the good people of DU cleared that up for me. She was just tricking me with all that comfort with multiculturalism and her love of collard greens. :(
