Light up the Night for Equal Rights Rally tomorrow in NYC: Details Follow
I will be doing crowd control. Incase anyone is interested!

12/18/08
-----------------
"Light Up the Night for Equal Rights"

On December 20th, we ask that you join us again for a nation-wide demonstration. The rally at City Hall on November 15, 2008 was just the beginning. In cities across the nation, people will once again be taking to the streets to stand up for Equality. We are not done fighting!!!

6:00pm
MARCH FROM HERALD SQUARE (35th St./6th Avenue)

7:00-8:00pm
RALLY NEAR TIMES SQUARE (7th Avenue/42nd St.)

---------------------------------------
THINGS TO BRING:

1. We ask that those attending bring either a CANDLE, FLASHLIGHT, or anything else that can be used to "light up the night."

2. Make a white knot out of ribbon and wear it! (Much like the red ribbon was the symbol for "AIDS Awareness," the white knot is being used as the symbol for "Marriage Equality" as a way of representing "tying the knot.")

---------------------------------------

For more information about this event and any future events in NYC, please check out our website:

Website-
http://jointheimpactnyc.wetpaint.com/

Keep checking back on the group page and our website for any updates. Also, join the event page we have posted. Please encourage your friends and families to join us. We can't fight this fight alone. We need the support of all of those around us. Send out an invite to all of your Facebook friends. Let's make this event HUGE!!!!!!!!!

---------------------------------------

If you are interested in volunteering we have several things that you can do to help out:

1. MARSHALS (crowd control the day of the event)

2. COMMUNITY OUTREACH (we will be posting a factsheet on this page and our website for people to hand out. On one side we will have facts about what rights the LGBTQ community is being denied and on the other there will be a flyer inviting them to the event on Dec. 20. We are encouraging everyone to take some time, print these materials off and pass them out to people on the street with their friends or anyone they know who might be interested. Many people do not know the number of rights that the LGBTQ community is being denied and it is important that we educate them.)

3. SET UP

4. CLEAN UP

5. Print out flyers and spread the word!!!!

To sign up for volunteering, go to our website www.jointheimpactnyc.wetpaint.com and sign up there or send us an email and let us know what you are interested in doing.

---------------------------------------

FOOD DRIVE

The same day that we are holding the march and rally, we will also be conducting a food drive at the Trader Joes and Whole Foods around Union Square. In the spirit of the holiday season, we felt it was important to give back to the community. The nation is hurting and so are its people. This is our way of helping alleviate the hunger Americans are facing during this difficult time.

With that said, we are looking for volunteers to help collect food for us and help in the distribution of it to the organization we have chosen, Sylvia's Place. If you would like to help out, please email [email protected] and sign up on our website www.jointheimpactnyc.wetpaint.com for more information.

If you are interested in donating food, we will be collecting at these two locations from 10-4. Please feel free to come by and drop off canned goods or other non-perishable food items.
---------------------------------------

Please feel free to design flyers and logos for this event and post them here or on our website in a format that they can be easily printed off for distribution.

---------------------------------------

STORIES:

We are looking for people to share their stories with us. We are thinking of possibly having people tell their stories at this upcoming rally or other future events. We are interested in stories that cover a wide range of gay rights issues. If you are having adoption issues, we want to hear. If you were wrongfully fired from your work, we want to know your story. Any and all stories are welcome. Tell us how you are directly affected by one of the 1.324 rights that the LGBTQ community is denied. We are looking for age range and diversity in stories. If you know someone who has a story that might not use facebook, share it with us and let us know how to get in touch with them. Please email us your stories at [email protected].

Let your voices be heard. Join the Impact!

Thanks,

Heath

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

Hey guys, more updates coming soon soon soon on Light Up the Night in NYC on Dec 20th. We are currently figuring out the basic logistics of the event. BE PREPARED!

As always, with big gay love,
Carrie

Our Story:

Many might not be entirely certain of how the protest on November 15th, 2008 started. It was not until November 10th that the five organizers had their first meeting to discuss the event.

The five of us, all of whom are in our early 20s, stumbled upon a Facebook page created by Emma P., a high school student from Connecticut. This page was a part of a larger national event known as JoinTheImpact that had only started 3 days before on November 7, 2008.

The five of us began communicating through facebook messages Monday morning and decided to get together and meet later that evening. Keep in mind that only 2 out of the 5 of us knew one another. We never anticipated how large this would get.

We had never organized a protest before and some of us had never even attended one either. Many might have thought us naive. But one thing united us all...a cause.

We had no money and very few contacts. The odds were stacked against us.

But here we are, just FIVE DAYS LATER, having organized a rally with 10,000 people, politicians, celebrities, etc. It speaks volumes as to what we are capable of. Not we, as organizers, but we as individuals.

I hope that our story inspires the younger generation, the generation that we are a part of, to stand up and fight for what is right. I hope it has instilled a new sense of hope in an older generation that has been fighting this fight for sometime.

Our time has come....IT is now!!!! WE are now!!!!

Heath Tucker

-----NOVEMBER 15, 2008-----
Today marked the start of what promises to be the nation's next great civil rights movement. 10,000 individuals gathered outside on the Broadway side of City Hall carrying signs of protest. They were all prepared to endure the heavy rain and thunderstorms that were forecasted, but instead were greeted with rays of sunshine. The day continued with speeches from City Council Member, Christine Quinn, Representative Anthony Weiner, Broadway star, Kate Shindle, former America's Next Top Model contestant, Kim Stolz, as well as many others.

Today marked the beginning of a new dawn and new era of activism. An older generation of activists joined together with many younger supporters in their teens and twenties, a generation that has for so long been plagued with apathy. It is my hope that the torch was passed on today to that younger generation that I, myself, and my fellow organizers are a part of.

It is now up to both the younger and older generation to unite and fight for what America promises all of its citizens...Equality. We will not stop until that fight is won!

2. CMWand I will burn candles for 24 hours beginning at 6 pm ET
tomorrow for our GLBT brothers and sisters. We've got a bunch of those 24-hour candles, and I know my sister-in-law and her partner, our goddaughters, and my mother-in-law will do the same.

10. Thank you for posting this. I'm going
I'm on my way out the door to go to the gathering in Chicago. I wouldn't have known about it if not for this post, so thank you. I've posted the event and links elsewhere too.

It's going to be cold, but I'll be bundled up, candles aglow! I hope a lot of people participate.
