Here's what I've been telling anti-choice folks
How do you enforce a total ban on abortion without vastly expanding the power of the government in ways that the Constitution does not allow? Think about it: the government would need to know about and track every pregnancy -- and have the right to investigate every one that does not come to term.

The kind of power they would need to effectively do those things would be staggering -- far beyond what the Constitution allows. Do you really want the USSC inventing such rights for the government?

2. Every OB/GYN would have to enlist in the Uterus Patrol
ensuring that every pregnancy is carried to term, or filling out a detailed DOJ form explaining why. I'm sure they'll love that.

15. Another thing
Where does the Constitution grant rights to embryos? Is that part of the sacred "original intent"?

3. Excellent points
as I recall some state legislator wanted to do just that.
Catherine Crier said that when the Constitution was written, abortions was legal.

4. An excellent and critical point

I shared such thoughts like these with my Reich wing sister, who assured me Bush would never abuse powers such as these or the Patriot Act. Knowing that her most dreaded nightmare is Hillary Clinton winning the Presidency, I pointed out we did not merely have to trust Bush but all who followed. I concluded with the following, "Two words: President Hillary." She was silent for a moment and then quietly said, "Maybe I better think more about this."

I don't really know why there are so scared of Hillary, but I can enjoy and exploit it shamelessly in any event.

5. The whole anti-choice issue
to me doesn't make a lot of sense. It appears to be (at this point at least) a Republican issue. (I'm old enough to remember when most Roman Catholics were Dems and it was different then) But are not Republicans the one who want government to..what is it they say... go down the bathtub drain or something?

I can see it now: you have to register your pregnancy test and take it in the drugstore bathroom.

No, if we go THERE they next thing they'll be doing is handing out burquas at the grocery store. No thank you.

If you don't want an abortion, don't have one. If you think you will go to hell, don't have one. And teach your kids your values. But if we start legislating this it is a slippery slope indeed.

6. If the Anti-Choicer is also a fundie, I don't argue at all.
Your argument is great if you're talking to someone who's not sure where they stand. (I'd also add the $ aspect. "Think what this would cost taxpayers?!")

If they're rabid fundamentalists though, no amount of information will permeate the thick frost in their brains. Just match their absurdity with uber-absurdity. Nathan Lane's line from the movie "The Birdcage" is great:

"Well, I think we should kill the mothers. The fetus is going to die anyway, why not let it go down with the ship?"

Is there a vulnerable Senate seat in your state?

7. Impossible. Over 2/3 of all fertilized, human ova fail to come to term.
Most are 'mis-carried' before they can implant. I always ask the real anti-abortion people who claim it is 'murder' to explain why their God would murder 2/3's of those darling babies.

Edited on Mon Oct-31-05 03:23 PM by brainshrub
Each time I've posed this question to a RWer, he acts surprised; It's almost as if he has never considered that the death penalty would be the logical penalty to enforce a prohibition on abortion.

Asking the question "What should be the penalty for abortion be?" forces the conservative to recognize that his daughter might very well be executed under an abortion ban. (Whether they want to admit it or not.)

9. this works for libertarians only
Actually the same could be said about the drug laws. I am guessing that most libertarians are getting good and fed up with the Repugs. Maybe they can be swayed to vote more with us.

10. ...and furthermore, wouldn't they be responsible for all of the unwanted
babies?

I've always asked this: are you, because you're "Pro-Life", prepared to adopt one or more of the unwanted, unplanned children who are born as a result of your position? And if not, what is the point of more children in the world, if no one is going to take care of them?

Pro-life should mean you're about the business of taking care of those who are already here, teaching your children to do the same, and staying out of the reproductive lives of others.

Just one woman's opinion...

14. Yes indeed!
I think that, if adoption was de-stigmatized, it'd do a lot more for the "pro-life" cause than criminalizing abortion ever could.

12. You know what's really comically sad?
I've heard about a few women who became pregnant and went to their doctor.

Later, after they miscarried, they received a lot of info from companies that "heard" about their pregnancy (despite laws of "privacy") - sometime at the point in which they would have "just given birth" . . .

19. Problem with that is the hospital records cannot be given to anyone
but the physician treating you, the hospital if you were admitted all have a copy of your insurance card. Before you ever see a doctor (you may have done this five years ago the first time you saw the doctor, or it may be on the bottom of every visit, you give them permission to contact your insurance company for payment and sometime you have signed your records rights away to your insurance company.

There is the one's selling information. Medical records from a physicians office as well as a hospital are private. However, Insurance companies can make lists and sell them to the highest bidders. You have to give them permission to have access to your records when you apply for some life insurances as well.

Just imagine all these little pod-looking things sitting in warehouse after warehouse in the deserts of Arizona. There are places that have every record that has ever been associated with you and your life.

And I'm not just saying this because it's Halloween either. I worked in Health Information Management for over 10 years and I know where these records go. (well, kinda).

16. They are pro choice when it comes to infertility. Why do they never
want to discuss that? I mean sometimes all of the fertilized eggs attach. That's where you get those women having 6 or 7 in a litter that have breathing problems while even some die. They know that when they get that many fertilized eggs placed inside them, there is a chance for them all to attach. The docs explain to them that if they do attach, the chances for all of them being healthy is not good. Therefore, they may have to make a choice down the road. They may have to abort the smaller fetuses so the stronger, larger ones have a better chance of survival.

So, that is an abortion right? They don't like this little secret to get out. As far as the religious right preaching, unless they personally have to go through this, they do not have a clue as to what really goes on at these fertility/abortion/egg-storage clinics.

17. They don't care
Edited on Mon Oct-31-05 06:55 PM by LiberalPartisan
Expanding governmental intrusion in to our private lives is fine with the forced birth crowd since they universally deny any right to privacy. Yes, I said forced birth because that is exactly what they are after: Forcing a woman to pay for her immoral actions. It may sound extreme but it's 100% accurate. You're talking about a group of people that are almost universally stupid.

18. Almost???? They, basically, are taking every individuals, especially
A woman's right to privacy. They cannot see this because we are the baby killers, and pro gay, and anti-christian. I'm none of those things; however, what is the difference between an evangelical Christian and just your plain, everyday Methodist. Of course, Bush is Methodist but I hear he goes to a Catholic Church in Washington. He hasn't converted but for some reason?????
