The scrapbook of Wrigley Field sports memories is about to expand when the Blackhawks face the Detroit Red Wings on New Year's Day.
"It's a baseball field of dreams, and now the hockey guys get to take it over," said NBC sports producer Sam Flood, whose network will air the second outdoor regular-season game in NHL history.
Bob Costas will host the coverage, joined by play-by-play man Mike Emrick, analyst Ed Olczyk, studio analyst Mike Milbury and rinkside reporter s Pierre McGuire and Darren Pang. Flood is a former captain of the Williams College hockey team.
"The most important cool tool we have is the airplane again; you never see a hockey game from that perspective," Flood said. "But this isn't about toys, it's about the event. We have a ton of cameras. We have cameras everywhere — from high up in the right-field bleachers, to a camera in the scoreboard, to rink-level cameras, to a roving camera that can go to some of the great parties on the rooftops across the street. This is a game you want to shoot wide so you see the whole spectacle."
