Tony Romo: Elite Quarterback?
The Sports Reporters are debating whether or not Tony Romo is an elite quarterback. What do DUers think about this question? In my opinion he is not an elite quarterback. It seems to me that he just happens to be on a good team. What do others think?

1. Close -- still in development. But he could easily reach elite this season.

2. A very good quarterback...not elite...
...and never will be as long as he is dating Satan's Spawn!

10. Patrick Crayton
didn't help much against the Giants. Without that drop, Dallas wins.

4. He's good enough.
This notion that you have to be an elite quarterback to win in the NFL is silly. Romo throws a good ball, but he's yet to perform in really big games. The team around him is good enough to win, without a doubt.

9. 8.4 lifetime yards per pass attempt is phenomenal

In fact, that's a silly number. I hope those Sports Reporters were sharp enough to mention it, but somehow I doubt it. That show always specializes in simpleton analysis along the lines of Jim Rome.

Let's put it this way, I always root for the last unbeaten to fall and I never worry about any team that doesn't have a QB with an outrageous YPPA number for its starting QB. It was Manning for several years, then Manning and Brady last season when Brady's YPPA soared to 8.3 after the addition of Moss and Welker. Normally Brady is always in the low 7 range.

This season I just want Dallas to blow one game. Hopefully tonight. Romo is anything but infallible but guys with that 8+ YPPA have such a fundamental advantage it can lead to one victory after another, particularly when the league is this imbalanced. Heading into tonight, Romo's 2008 YPPA is beyond 10.

12. It takes a TEAM to have the 8+ YPPA. You need protection and good receivers.

It's a team stat, not an individual statistic.

14. He's been great so far, but you can't call him great yet
That'd be like calling Daunte Culpepper great 3 years ago.

15. Best in the league....
...now that Brady is out. You can procratinate all you want, but the Cowboys are for real! What other 3-0 team has played the caliber of opponents the Cowboys have? None! The Boyz are back in town!

16. He's good, but consider the pieces around him.
T.O., Barber, Witten, Felix Jones, and 3 Pro Bowl starters from last year on the O-Line. Imagine what someone like Drew Brees or Matt Hasslebeck could do with that sort of offensive firepower.

17. Only been starting a year and a half
Needs to reach a super bowl. And he needs to stop throwing the ball in tight coverage. He's good, but he's no Aikman. Oh, and I'm a Cowboy fan.

Another Cowboy fan here; not in the same class as Staubach or Aikman, but better than Meredith and Danny White

23. No. He falls apart in the playoffs.
Or if anyone gets a bit of pressure on him. He throws a nice ball and is good when there is no pressure but he's not elite.
