Extremely talented horse but I couldn't take that price, less than 5/2 ($6.80). I ended up playing Big Brown in a matchup against Colonel John, who I didn't fully believe in, but it turned out he beat the horse I respected more, Pyro.
Pyro was squeezed early but I doubt he hits the board with a perfect trip. All day the speed was holding up. It really helps that ESPN2 shows the undercard. That's what encouraged me to make the matchup bet on Big Brown.
Anyway, a numbing day and I have no idea how they promote the Preakness, other than a likely walkover. Almost 10 lengths back to the surviving horse, Dennis of Cork. And I haven't heard of a classy lurker a la Bernardini two years ago. Right now it seems like the least compelling Preakness in memory, from a competitive standpoint. It looked like it was verified as a weak crop today. Maybe Colonel John moves forward, and I guess Pyro could be hyped at Belmont distance.
Final thought: the guy from Yum Brands should be euthanized after that performance at the trophy presentation. He obviously had rehearsed a simpleton pronouncement ("great day!...") and had no clue he needed to adapt to the situation. His gleeful plastic smile could not have been more out of place.
Beshear wasn't much better.
I'd like to give them benefit of a doubt -- that they didn't yet know Eight Belles' fate -- but Bob Costas was standing smack alongside the goof from Yum Brands when he echoed the Triumph and Tragedy theme of Tom Hammond. Costas looked appropriately disgusted when the Yum Brands clown was speaking.
