Chicago sports writers calling for a forfeit.....
GUESS WHAT, CHICAGO? Detroit fans still remember the 1990s and the insufferable arrogance of Michael Jordan. Times have changed.

1. insufferable arrogance of Michael Jordan?
Is that the only smack you can come up with Lisa because it's pretty damn weak.

2. Really
I seem to remember the '91 Pistons refusing to shake hands after that year's conference finals.

4. Michael Jordan is loathed in the state of Michigan
Whining and crying about the Pistons being hooligans then winning championship after championship with the same tactics. Amazing talent, yes. Changed the face of modern basketball, yes. But you can be those things and still be an arrogant jerk -- which he was and is.

Here's a great article about the old rivalry written just before the current series began.

7. No, they were a great team that properly changed the style of basketball
Early and mid '80s NBA was pure wimp garbage. I can't stop laughing when I watch it on ESPN Classic. A 5 foot jumper? Sure, any time you want.

Chuck Daly snuffed out Showtime with 48 minutes of sustained defensive intensity. Then the Bulls and other teams made sure that style continued to prevail.

I remember the average score of an NBA game when I loved to Las Vegas was a laughable and disgraceful 218 points. Now it's about 194, after dipping even lower than that.

I realize there is no future in arguing the '80s Lakers and Celtics were overrated. Fans lap up that offensive minded crap and view it nostalgically. I just wish teams like that could take the court today or in recent years, stymied and complaining before they even made it into the lane.

10. No, they set the game back to the dark ages
They were a bunch of hacks who couldn't win on actual talent, so they had to beat people up to win.

12. I couldn't agree more!
I've always preferred a defensive style of play, no matter the sport (I still fondly remember a 5-3 Michigan win, where the game was essentially played in the mud). Tastes differ, of course, but give me good old-fashioned D any day of the week!

9. That big whiny baby who wouldn't let Isiah play in the Olympics?
Not one member of the Bad Boys was on the Dream Team, and it was all due to Michael, who threatened not to play if any Pistons were on the team. Ah, sportsmanship. (Then he wouldn't march with the team in the Olympic parade, and he wouldn't wear the team warmups!)

He's not exactly popular in Detroit, with good reason.

11. The Bulls shouldn't feel bad
Not in the long run, I mean. They disposed of the defending champs and had a good season. The Pistons are just the better team, largley because of their poise. That comes from experience, and the Bulls will eventually build that up.

14. Sure - I'll let the Detroit News do it for me
Edited on Tue May-15-07 04:11 PM by LisaM
It's hard to explain to people who drool over Jordan that there are two sides to the story. First, Detroit was in line to have a whole bunch of championships. They got hurt by expansion, and then the league decided that they would rather see razzle dazzle than defense.

I post this knowing full well you'll 1) never agree with me; and 2) not even consider that there is a Detroit POV to the whole thing. Oh well!!! Go ahead and prove me wrong!

~snip

A day earlier, Bulls guard Michael Jordan sat in The Palace stands and talked about how happy he was to see the Pistons fall.

"Their style of play is bad for basketball," Jordan said.

The words stung the Pistons. They had built their team on mental toughness and physical intimidation. The Pistons wanted opponents to think twice before driving the lane. Jordan was knocked down a number of times and complained through the media

snip~

On edit: what Jordan was really saying was that is was bad for HIS style of basketball.

Also, need I remind you about the 3 consecutive seasons that the Pistons knocked the Bulls out of the playoffs?

Now I have to make a cross in front of my face to ward off the spirits....

Tigers: 4:05 pm
Pistons: 5:00 pm
Red Wings: 6:00 pm

(I'm on the West Coast).

If I could only have one win tonight, I'd have to take the Wings, but there's the Holy Trinity as far as I am concerned!

I prepared a lucky dinner last night (Swedish meatballs) to help the Wings win. Now, I'm going to have to think of a lucky Pistons dinner, some sort of Detroit-based food, luckily, there are plenty of yummy choices.

37. Some of the nicest fans we ever met were Iowa fans
Edited on Fri May-18-07 06:01 PM by LisaM
We were watching the Michigan-Iowa game in a bar and got put into a room with some Iowa fans (the only TV that was showing it). It was a wedding party. The father of the bride bought a pitcher of beer for us, and he said, "Hell, I'll buy a pitcher for my Michigan friends!" I never forgot it (and we were really young and poor, so it was really appreciated, too).

We tend to be an agreeable bunch. It's hard to have an attitude when Iowa is something like 9-47 vs Michigan in football historicly. But believe me, those 9 were SWEET!
