I think I know what seeds are
I've never been a big basketball fan. I always cheer for my team, and I got pretty excited two or three years ago when 'Bama was ranked number one for a few days. (And went on to miss the dance.)

I've never understood the whole "seed" thing.

Now that I've just started thinking about it, is my best guess correct?

It's just the ranking you have, according to the selection committee, within your bracket? That's gotta be it, doesn't it? Right?

1. It's just a ranking system
The selection committee is obligated to seed 31 automatic bids, because those teams won their conference tournament. The other 34 teams are determined by the selection committee. The seeds and brackets that a team is placed in is pretty much an arbitrary process.
