49ers hire Trent Baalke as GM....is Harbaugh next?

As expected, in-house candidate Trent Baalke was named the 49ers general manager today, according to a league source familiar with the just-made decision.

Baalke has been considered the front runner ever since team president Jed York announced he would hire a GM last week in St. Louis. Baalke spent the past nine months acting as a GM, but with the title of vice president of player personnel.

I don't know about this. I thought Jed York was going to make some kind of exhaustive nationwide search, at least that's what he said. Maybe he meant just for a HC...speaking of which:

The source also emphasized that Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh remains far and away the team’s No. 1 target and has signed off on either Lombardi or Baalke as the GM.

York and Harbaugh have had talks throughout the last few days, the source said, and are believed to have had several more today.

Harbaugh is a long-time associate of Lombardi’s. The source said that Harbaugh and Baalke have spent time together the last few weeks and that they share representation–power agent David Dunn has represented both at times.

The conclusion: Harbaugh is likely to be hired as the 49ers’ head coach, possibly as soon as tomorrow night, the source said.

it hasn't exactly been a secret over the last couple days. I'm going to wait until the HC hire is made before I get upset..

Baalke is not the next John McVay... that's what they needed. I can't believe these Yorks. Holy, holy shit!

5. Welcome to my world..
He reminds me a lot of Vinny Cerrato, Snyder's yes man/GM. He finally wised up and got a real GM. But the Yorks are rapidly becoming just like Snyder. I'm beginning to think much like here, nobody can succeed. Good luck with Harbaugh if you get him.
