Torre out, Mattingly in for the Dodgers...
LOS ANGELES -- Joe Torre will announce later Friday that he is stepping down as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers after the season, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed this morning on the condition of anonymity. As has been speculated from the moment Torre was hired almost three years ago, the club also will name hitting coach Don Mattingly to succeed Torre as manager.

Torre told reporters before Thursday night's game at San Francisco that he had decided what he planned to do, but that only his wife, his daughter and Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti knew of that decision and that he wouldn't be making it public until later.

Torre's move was first reported by the Los Angeles Times on Friday.

Wow. I know the Dodgers are kind of out of it this year, but they've been VERY competitive since Torre took over...:wow:

1. It's been obvious for awhile that Torre was done here.

The consensus was that Mattingly would follow him, not take over.

This is a surprise.

EDIT: The consensus among Dodger fans I know personally, that is.

2. Great manager IMO...
I can understand his decision to retire upon turning 70 this year.

3. Torre is 70
So it's no surprise that he's facing the end of his extraordinary career. Congrats to Mattingly!!!

4. Torre didn't have it in him even when the Dodgers took him...
past his prime, although in his prime you gotta give him credit.

As for Mattingly, eh, now that Manny is gone from the Dodgers I could care less what happens to them.
