On what did Pete Rose bet?
I was wondering if Pete Rose bet on his own team to either win or lose.

1. No he didn't
Which is why what he did wasn't cheating. Unlike the 'roiders. It was against the rules and really stupid, but they call gambling an addiction for a reason. I've seen guys like this...gambling is just an impulse that is hard for them to control. He's more than paid his debt to MLB, put him in the Hall already.

2. he bet on his team to win
Yes this was cheating though. He had certain amount of runs he had to win by. You need to do research. There is all kinds of evidence that he tried to manipulate his teams performance. Slimy bastard. I say this as a long time Reds fan too.

5. Makes no sense
Baseball betting is win only. A very slight percentage of wagers is on the so-called run line, where you give or get a run and a half. Most bookies don't even offer that prop.

I've seen the betting notes and the odds he was quoting are typical baseball odds to win, like -120 (to win 100).

I'm not a baseball fan and don't care about this issue. But manipulating to win is a comical claim. There hasn't been a single fixing scandal in history where the team or individual was told to win by more than the spread. By definition it's absurd.

I've read a few reaches, by non-betting types saying he tried to win too hard on one day, therefore jeopardizing his team's chances the next day when he bet against them. That's looney tune backfitting, hardly the real world. You could get a gullible jury to buy it but anyone who has bet day to day would laugh you out of the court room.

3. Well, We'll Disagree
No hall. No excuses. And it was cheating. Betting to win or betting against doesn't matter. It altered the decision making of a manager.

That's cheating the game, inherently.

Besides, competetiveness is often obsessive, so the 'roiders may be just as trapped by their own need to succeed. If you excuse one, you must excuse the other.

You're trying to play both ends against the middle.
