OK, You Motley Catholics/Orthodox -- Time to VOTE!

We're starting to get us a MOVEMENT, to quote Arlo Guthrie.

OK, at least a discussion group.

Now all interested parties need to post in this thread and say the guidelines I've written are OK as is or should be modified (and how.) Skinner may well ask us to change something in the wording but if the basic contents are OK with everyone, we can send it on.

Also tell me in this thread is you think that "Catholic and Orthodox Christian Issues Group" covers it well enough as a group name.

"This Group is for those who wish to hold respectful discussions of Catholic and/or Orthodox Christian beliefs, share faith experiences, post prayer requests, discuss Catholic/Orthodox liturgies, traditions, saints, etc., talk about Catholic education or organizations (Knights of Columbus, Pax Christi, Legion of Mary, the Catholic Worker movement, etc.) or in any way positively explore issues having to do with the Roman Catholic Church or any rite of the Catholic or Orthodox Church."

"Participants need not be practicing members of one of the Catholic or Orthodox rites but should be respectful of the beliefs and structures of the rites, especially in advocating any changes, such as allowing women to serve as priests."

"This group is intended to be a venue for those who desire to discuss stated topics and is not intended as a forum to argue against Catholic/Orthodox belief or the Catholic/Orthodox Churches, members, or clergy."

Thanks for reading and vote early!!!

7. Sign me up, DemBones
Time to live up to my handle; stop that freakin' pendulum, by force if necessary.

Time for the deep-center Catholics and Orthodox to band together and take back our God from the perverse extremists!

12. That's because I AM progressive--a neoprogressive, that is!!
That's my point! Catholics ought to start a religious/political movement and name it the Neoprogressive Movement, which will include secularizing the language of Christ's and the Church's social teachings so non-Catholics, even non-Christians, can understand, relate to, and hopefully even accept!

John
Looking for a nice quiet place to hang out. Especially one that serves fish on Fridays.

18. We will serve fish on Fridays, and I'll make black bean soup

for those who don't eat fish. I prayed for all of you at early mass this morning and for the success of our group.

:hi:

Thanks again for your suggestions, I think they helped round out what I was saying, and make it more clear that we're about anything related to being Catholic.

Great. I look forward to discussing the Knights of Columbus in particular. Dad is a Fourth Degree Knight and Past Grand Knight (1999-2000), and two-time delegate to the State Convention.

and our statement of principles, with a request to approve our group. I'm going to check over it one more time -- and add scarlet owl's name to our list :-) -- and then I'm sending it.

28. Can Anglo-Catholics or Old Catholics get in on this
Anglo-Catholics are so far outside the mainstream of Anglicanism we may as well start our own religion. Same for Old Catholics.

Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 05:53 PM by WannaJumpMyScooter
Lutherans, Episcopalians, and Anglicans, no?

at least, as a Lutheran, I feel it does.

Seems too restrictive for me to participate under those rules, and I, would, otherwise, be glad to participate.

Thanks for listening.

Duh.... on edit... I thought this was being proposed for THIS group. Sorry, I can't read clearly after an aquavit Thanksgiving.

35. I mean no disrespect to Orthodox Christians..
but the average Roman Catholic does not refer to him/herself an 'Orthodox Christian'. There are more Roman Catholics than any other religious denomination in the world based on the 'organized' religious body way of looking at things (a la www.Adherents.com). There are more Roman Catholics in the world than any other Protestant or Christian sect. I find the title of this discussion group as "the Catholic/Orthodox Churches" to be somehow marginalizing, as if Catholics are a minority group within Christianity.

(The Eastern Rites who do follow the Vatican call themselves Catholics, I believe. The Eastern rites who do not follow the direction of the Vatican may not be interested in being lumped in with the Catholics.)
