Selling the End of Religion
Edited on Fri Sep-09-11 11:07 AM by cleanhippie
The Gruen Transfer is an Australian television show that focuses on advertising. One of their regular segments is called “The Pitch,” where “ad agencies compete to sell the unsellable.” In other words, ad agencies are challenged to put together an ad for something like bringing back child labor, or tourism in Bagdad, or whale meat. Apparently they got in trouble for a episode where they proposed a war on New Zealand.

This one is apparently one of their most controversial: sell a ban on all religion. Only two agencies were willing to take the challenge.

Wow. On a show that kind of makes a joke about selling the unsellable, the two agencies actually made two VERY compelling arguments, using fact and reason. Those are some very brave people. Bravo!

1. I liked the first one better,
both were excellent. It is true the second one had more emotional impact. Which is why I give the first one the edge. I have a hard time getting my head around using emotion to appeal to people's logic.

5. In order to be totally logical about the proposition of banning religion,
it should be made as less the propaganda campaign as it is, by comparison to the real-world experiment where religion was banned, which of course would be the USSR, China, Eastern Europe, South Asia, etc.

7. You forgot another experiment - the USA
When the war was over and the victory over our enemies won, and the blessings and happiness of liberty and peace were secured, the Constitution was framed and God was neglected.

He was not merely forgotten. He was absolutely voted out of the Constitution.

The proceedings, as published by Thompson, the secretary, and the history of the day, show that the question was gravely debated whether God should be in the Constitution or not, and after a solemn debate he was deliberately voted out of it...

There is not only in the theory of our government no recognition of God's laws and sovereignty, but its practical operation, its administration, has been conformable to its theory. Those who have been called to administer the government have not been men making any public profession of Christianity...(George) Washington was a man of valor and wisdom. He was esteemed by the whole world as a great and good man; but he was not a professing Christian.
- Rev. Wilson, sermon, Albany NY, 1831 (attributed to both Rev. James Renwick Wilson and Rev. Bird Wilson)

11. Officially godless nations were rare in the 18th century
Well, maybe not in that alternate universe you seem to inhabit.

12. The United States was hardly
an officially "godless nation". It was a free nation. The USSR was an officially godless nation.
