Do You Believe in the Future?
1. Woman on a Desert Island

Suppose a woman arrives on a desert island and, after being there alone for three years, she gives birth to a baby girl. Perhaps the baby girl has her mother's brown eyes and brown hair. We can explain details about the baby girl, just as we can extrapolate from the present and invent plausible details for an imaginary future. However, what if there won't be any future?

2. Many Books about the Future

Some of those books are hopelessly vague. Others include small but definite errors, not mere typographical errors, but guesses that have already proven to be incorrect. The obvious conclusion is that they are fables. Now, think about the fable of a fox who cannot reach some grapes and says, "Those grapes are probably sour." Knowing that fables always include at least some errors, you might suspect that the fox didn't use those exact words, but instead used some other words. Of course, you would be wrong. The correct conclusion is that there was no talking fox. Similarly, after seeing a wide variety of misinformation about some so-called "future", we should conclude that there is no such thing. There won't be a future.

2. My current thoughts on the abstraction of time
Edited on Thu Jan-06-11 05:40 PM by Newest Reality
is that it is the only way to keep everything from happening at once.

Time can be a useful tool, but for me, the past and the future are ideas about what was or will be only now.

Edit: Word lost in cerebrum and then found.

5. The past is a memory, and therefore unreal. The future is a dream, and therefore unreal.
Only the present exists in the strictest sense of the verb "to exist".

All I know for sure is that I can't change the past because it's gone, and I can't change the future because it hasn't arrived yet, so I can only change the present and hope that in doing so I can have a positive influence on the future when it finally does arrive. But the future can't arrive, because when it does it's not the future anymore; it's the present. But even if I can't change the future, and even if the future never comes, I still have the present, and that is where all my thoughts and deeds take place anyway, so maybe having the present is enough.

7. A "nightmare" is a fear about the future.
If you are being chased by a hungry bear your problem is not with the present. You are ahead of the bear. It hasn't caught you. But you are filled with worry about the future. "What if the bear catches me?" "What if the bear eats me?" Your fears are always about the future. Nightmares cannot exist in the present. Only in the future. And what exists only in the future is not real.

14. except there really isn't any "present".
Everything you are is either in the past or future, since the present is so infinitely instantaneous as to not exist. How's that blow your mind?

8. A heartfelt exposition of disbelief in the future should avoid
using any future tenses. That betrays lack of conviction. There isn't any future. There wasn't any future. Now you're talking.

15. I think your OP would be improved by defining the word, "future."
Of course by the word, "improved," I mean more to my liking.

16. Are you asking if I think time is real?
It is. Some events that have not yet happened will happen. Entropy will continue to increase.

I have no idea what your two examples have to do with the reality of time.
