'Christ The Redeemer' Undergoes Renovation
'Christ the Redeemer' undergoes renovation

NECN/APTN
Mar 13, 2010

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Rio de Janeiro's most famous monument, the Christ the Redeemer statue, is undergoing renovation works this year, aimed at preserving it from damage caused by the environment. Architects are researching materials that could withstand rain and lightning, which often strikes the soapstone monument, at an elevation of more than 2,296 feet.

"We are analyzing the materials in a laboratory and trying to see which material would be most appropriate for the statue in this location. We are also looking into the possibility of placing a silicone coat over the statue , which will help preserve it longer," architect Diogo Carlos said.

The pricey facelift is estimated at 4 million US dollars, Father Omar Raposo, the Rector of the Christ the Redeemer said, and is being funded by Brazilian mining giant Vale Rio Doce and by church contributions. Although the 130 foot effigy is still open to the public, visitors venturing up to Corcovado Mountain will see the Christ statue surrounded by scaffolding and several dozen laborers.

The Christ the Redeemer was inaugurated in 1931. It was designed by French sculptor Paul Landowski and took nine years to build. It was voted one of the seven modern wonders of the world in 2007. The renovated statue is scheduled to be inaugurated in June 2010.

- Meanwhile the Rio de Janeiro slums remain as they are -- "unredeemed."

3. Ah, but nuclear warheads

aboard a U.S. aircraft carrier and the warplanes that deliver them come under the protection of the outstretched arms of The Redeemer. :sarcasm:

5. I love that statue. It sums up the idea of love, community and belonging
that I feel from Jesus, who in my opinion was a very great man.

11. I suppose if one needs.....
...a made-up deity to help them feel better about life, it is an awe-inspiring statue. Better than what the real thing (if he'd ever exited) would have looked like:

- Personally, I'd prefer if people thought less about Fantasy Jesus and more about the reality of what his purported words meant. Well some of them anyway. Such as not wasting money and resources worshiping idols while people go poor and hungry....

6. Spotter? Not needed really

because Brazil has no enemies from the outside.

Give a Brazilian a "cafezinho," a mulatta, a samba and a "sexta" in World Cup futebol and he is a happy man. :-)

Understand that the government will be working hard the next few years to clean up the city for the 2014 Olympics and the 2016 World Cup, but the favelas will probably always be there.

10. K & R
It's all about priorities, DeSwiss! And if you think of the Bible stories, this is precisely what god would have done as well. The god portrayed in the bible never cared about the people it destroyed, only about itself.

13. The article says.....
...Jesus may be about to get some kind of silicone job.

- I suppose that if he's been up there since 1931 he probably is sagging in a few places.
