Christian textbooks
"Those who do not believe that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God will find many points in this book puzzling," says the introduction to "Biology: Third Edition" from Bob Jones University Press. "This book was not written for them."

The textbook delivers a religious ultimatum to young readers and parents, warning in its "History of Life" chapter that a "Christian worldview ... is the only correct view of reality; anyone who rejects it will not only fail to reach heaven but also fail to see the world as it truly is."

2. I thought this Christian God of theirs said something about only he would be doing the judging?
Reality is the only way to see the world as it really is. Reality is the only real reality. Any other way is deception.

11. Have you criticized text books from other religions consistent with your disdain for all things
supernatural?

you had gone on your crusade.

16. No examples, huh?
It does seem to be a uniquely christian funamentalist phenomena, this teaching of creation stories as science. But if you do find some examples, I would be happy to denounce their efforts as well.

4. I say the more the better.
Let 'em get so fucking stupid they can't feed themselves. These are the same idiots who crow about the free market. Fine. Before long the only thing they'll be fit for are the most menial tasks around.

If we can just figure out how to keep them out of government until that happens...

5. "It is a precept of my Christian faith that my redemption comes through Christ, but I am also a big
believer in the Golden Rule, which I think is an essential pillar not only of my faith but of my values and my ideals and my experience here on Earth. I've said this before, and I know this raises questions in the minds of some evangelicals. I do not believe that my mother, who never formally embraced Christianity as far as I know … I do not believe she went to hell."

8. The creationists
and the rest of that ilk aren't practicing religion in any meaningful sense of the word. And they have no faith. They can call it Christianity all they want, but it's really just a power grab through an expansion of cultural market share.

Bob Jones University, Patrick Henry College, Liberty University and the rest of that crowd are a carbuncle on the ass of humanity and the sooner they are exposed for the money grubbing shysters they are the better off we will all be.

There are plenty of fine upstanding Christians (and Muslims and Buddhists and New Agers etc.) in the world, but their faith is being appropriated by crooks and giving them a huge black eye in the process.

For every Barak Obama those assholes are training about a hundred Michele Bachmanns (an alum of Oral Roberts University). Religious fundamentalists are the scariest and probably the most dangerous people on the planet.

13. I'm pretty rusty when it comes to matters of scripture
Edited on Sat Mar-06-10 11:17 PM by rrneck
but isn't there one that goes, "You will know them by their works."

People are free to believe anything they want. In fact, faith is a fundamental component of the human condition. The shared experience of faith, otherwise known as religion, is a fundamental element of a stable society. Religion is certainly not the source of a revenue stream or a path to political power.

I should clarify. I don't hate Christians. I was raised Southern Baptist (although I'm a raging iconoclast now) and my brother was a missionary for many years. He's one of the finest men I have ever known. I don't consider the people to whom I was referring Christians no matter what they may call themselves. As far as I'm concerned, they're just money grubbing assholes. Anybody willing to profit from the faith of others isn't practicing religion.

Edit to add: They're practicing Capitalism.

14. You said "If we can just figure out how to keep them out of government until that happens" which
was a broad brush that included Obama.

Of course as you just explained you like some Christians and don't like other Christians.

Have a peaceful evening. :hi:

17. Well, not exactly.
I don't dislike anybody because of their faith. I don't even dislike them because of a disingenuous profession of faith. I dislike profit from faith. I dislike the use of faith to exercise power for profit. I dislike liars.

Of course, I suppose there was a broad brush in my initial response in a way. If I were a Christian I wouldn't claim those creationists nor would I defend them. If the practice of Christianity were all that beneficial to humanity, why are not the adherents to that faith unable to police their own ranks? Some of the most egregious offenses against humanity have been perpetrated in the name of Christ.

Christianity gets a pass from me, as if it needed it, because it developed in tandem with the explosion of resources that prompted the development of civilization. I don't think any system of faith would have been immune to that influence. Time will tell how it will fare when the contraction of resources comes.

And a good evening to you as well. :hi:
