1. Would love to see watchmen
or better yet Marvelman (AKA MiracleMan here in the States). But Hollywood has fucked up so much of Alan Moore's stuff.. (AKA League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell)

From IMDB for Alan Moore
# V for Vendetta (2006) (announced) (graphic novel)
# Watchmen (2005) (pre-production) (comic books)

3. Marvelman rules
the only comic out there showing a woman giving birth, showing the baby coming out of the uterus. Amazingly accurate and amazing to see in a book anyone could buy right off the shelf.

Also one of the few books I've ever seen where the hero murders a little boy to prevent a monster from using the kid to manifest in the world.

Oh, yeah, and throw the villain to the earth from so far up in space that friction destroyed the bad guy's body.

Kimota!

4. and all that was left
was the guy's pelvic bone.

Can you imagine if DC comics did the same kind of makeover to Captain Marvel as they did to MarvelMan? Captain Marvel Jr. with a crush on Captain Marvel? Shazam!

6. Watchmen would be so cool, done properly.
I'd love to see Marvelman too. I agree that the LXG adaption left a lot to be desired, and FRom Hell was lame as well.

2. Is Catcher in the Rye considered graphic?
Maybe when it came out, but nowadays it probably seems tame...

5. Actually, by graphic novels I mean comic book trade paperbacks.
I'd love to see a good Catcher in the Rye movie, though. Oh crap. I hope I didn't just kill your punchline.

7. V for Vendetta?
Or perhaps one of the storylines from Love and Rockets. Or some of the better Cerebus the Aardvark material.... Or "David Boring" by Daniel Clowes. Or maybe a decent adaptation of Zot!....

Actually, I generally dread seeing a film adaptation of a comic. Superman was good. Ghost World was good. Hollywood killed the X-Men and Batman for me. I'd hate to see any of Alex Ross's work torn up that way. They'd make everyone dress up in leather catsuits, because that's what they do. Why do they do that? Jeepers, what's wrong with spandex, anyway?

<Walks away muttering>....

10. It's been in development hell for years.
There was also talk of a Death spinoff movie but that hasn't gotten off the ground either.

At one point Fairuza Balk was literally begging to play her. She's the only one I could imagine in that role. :)

I think they should only do movies of stupid mainstream comics. All the works you listed (apart from 'Marvels') are wonderful pieces of art in their own right, and at least 50% of that is the drawing - you can't replicate that on screen.

Although now that I think of it, animated versions might be cool.

Is anyone a Battle Angel Alita fan? Don't say 'yes' unless you want to hear an enormous, wierd rant about the overarching Miltonian/gnostic/Christian theme of that comic...

14. Never seen it, but I'd love to hear the rant.
I'm a Milton fan myself. Would you believe I'm planning a book on Milton and the Promethean character of Western literature? Oh, and you're right for the most part, but I'd love to see a Watchmen film. I really would.

19. Be careful what you wish for...
Seriously, we would be here all day. If I ever write the essay I'll PM you a copy. Suffice it to say there's a "God" character who's insane and creates life just to see it suffer, a "Satan" character who's bitter and misunderstood, and a "Christ" character who learns to stand up to his dad. Battle Angel Alita (originally the unpronouncable "Gunnm" ("Gun Dreams") in Japanese) is a series of graphic novels, although a half-decent OAV was made of the first two. All the religious metaphor doen't really start up until book 5 or so. And besides all the Miltonian crap it's also a kick-ass martial arts cyborg adventure type thing. It's definitely my favourite manga and probably my favourite piece of sci-fi overall.

I'd really have no objection to seeing a Watchmen movie... if it didn't suck. Which it would.

15. "Dark Knight Returns"
If they must (and I agree that many of these just can't be filmed).

I have in mind Nick Nolte for Batman. He's got that chin, and the gravelly voice, and the world-weary attitude.

18. Preacher would be pretty damn good as a movie.
If we could get someone decent (*cough*Peter Jackson*cough*) to take care of it, that is. I don't see it flying in Jesusland, though. :(

James Marsters as Cassidy! C'mon, that would be cool. :)
