Just a thought:
Some of us live way out in the boondocks. I, for example, have to take my 50cc scooter more than 60 miles (round trip) to find a decent bookstore.

My thought was:

How about nominating and selecting books earlier, then advising DU. They could then put the information up and link to the book on Amazon.com (or another on-line book source). I/we could then do two things at once:

  1. Order the book on-line in time for it to arrive before the designated month.
  2. Contribute a little bit more cash to DU when I buy a book that was linked to through DU. (however that bit works)

1. Bartcop has one of those
You might consider it, until/if DU gets one.

3. First month
This just happens to be the first month of the club so the selection and start of reading were a bit rushed. As I understand it, we should have a book for February voted by mid-December. That should give everyone 6 weeks to locate a copy. Any online store will get it to you in that amount time.

Interesting idea on DU getting a referral bonus for directing book purchases to some online seller.

4. I agree. I have to admit I was shocked that the discussion
for the December book started immediately following the voting. I thought that "December Book" meant we had December to read it, and then we could discuss it beginning in January. I'm not sure how many people could have obtained and read the book in that tiny time frame between the end of the voting and now (it is only December 3 mind you). I'm still looking for a discount copy (I was unaware when voting that it is not even available in paperback yet, and shouldn't that be disclosed to the budget minded among us???).

At this point, all of the good discussion will be had by the time I get and read the book, so I guess I am just going to skip to the January book so I can at least have it started by New Year's Day.

Whatever happened to the concept of lag time???

5. Duly noted, however it looks like there are only 4 or 5 of us...
...that have already posted discussion material, and upwards of 50 people participated in the voting (and presumably will participate in the discussion once they are done). In my case, I had just finished the book a couple weeks prior to the whole book club thing coming up, so I didn't think it necessary to re-read it. And it looks like the others have also read it already, just by chance.

I would advise you to go ahead and read it, because it ties in really well with January's book - they really do go hand in hand as far as analysis goes. The way I see it, "Kansas" is a concrete example of the psychological element of conservatives presented in Lakoff's book. I went ahead and got it since I already read "Kansas", though I'm not yet finished.

6. Yes, I'm afraid the first book got kind of squeezed.

As far as time to obtain the book.

However, part of the idea of an internet book club is to discuss as you are reading it. So you get onto p. 10 and post something about THAT, etcetera. You don't read the whole thing at once and then discuss. If you read the whole thing and THEN discussed, people would forget what they had read. See, it's different from a book club IRL.:D

On the original discussion thread, I asked if people wanted to start in Dec or Jan, and everyone who spoke up was pro-December. So that's where that came from.

There will be more of a time lag now that we are "on schedule." And, I have just bought the book myself and am in the middle of it...

Cheers,
C
