GELAC- whats the deal?
Ok, to me it looks like Kerry's website has had a few changes. There's a link allowing you to:
"raise funds now to cover recount expenses"

https://contribute.johnkerry.com/gelac.html?team=4617

2 questions;

1) I Heard Kerry already had quite a bit of cash left over, which could have been used to recount... what's happened to it all???

2) Does this mean that they are FINALLY doing something about the outcome of the election???

(P.S. questions are NOT intended to be rhetorical, I am honestly confused at this point as to what exactly is happening on their side)

2. Could this mean?
They are getting ready for a huge legal battle? Wishful thinking, but at least I'm staying positive...

19. NO!! the people who are carrying the load are
the Green and Libertarian candidates in Ohio (Cobb and Badnerik, respectively), AND all the everyday people like you and me who have contributed directly to THEIR Recount efforts, AND a small handful of DUers who got this whole recount ball rolling in the first place. Their names are IdaBriggs who discovered the NH anomalies and along with hedda_foil, co-founder of the National Ballot Integrity Project, and the help of some DUers who faxed Nader (and Randi Rhodes listeners too), which persuaded him to make his recount request WITHIN ONE MINUTE OF THE DEADLINE two weeks ago today.

Shortly thereafter hedda_foil and several of her colleagues formed a 527 specifically for the purpose of helping FUND the recounts. Her National Ballot Integrity Project could not be directly involved.

If you or anyone wants to help with this project, please contribute either directly to the Cobb Compaign or to hedda's 527:

www.helpamericarecount.org

www.ballotintegrity.org/

There have been NO REPORTS of Kerry's campaign or lawyers doing ANYthing but having a few lawyers in Ohio "observing" or "fact gathering." There have been no contributions to the effort (that I know of) either monetary or with manpower, expertise, etc.

The Cobb Campaign AND Help America Recount have been very busy getting organized -- recruting and training volunteers and observers, formulating strategy, raising money, getting lawyers, COMPUTER EXPERT TEAMS, etc., etc., etc. with NO HELP WHATSOEVER FROM THE KERRY CAMPAIGN.

Donate your money wherever you wish, but MY contributions for this will go to Help America Recount because I know hedda_foil personally and have worked with her outside of DU on several projects (trying to stop the war, the Dean campaign, computerized voting, etc.), and because they and the Cobb Campaign are GETTING THINGS DONE in Ohio, and also to honor the DUers who MADE THIS HAPPEN by helping fund their efforts.

If you want to be more directly involved (or want to contribute in other ways), here are some DU links where you can become active:

4. I don't think so
I think this donation page has been up for a while. If you want to help with recount money, I wouldn't give here. I gave to one of the other recount groups and I'm a huge Kerry fan. But I think they've got all the money they need to help whatever lawyers are in Ohio.

There was always a 'donation' link, that must have been from pre-election times... but the whole GELAC thing was not on the site a couple of days ago...

I thought he had $15 million in unspent campaign funds that could be used for a recount, and he is asking for more money?

co-founder of the National Ballot Integrity Project, who along with DUer IdaBriggs was instrumental in getting this whole recount thing going in the first place:

8. That most definitely is a different page from the prior GELAC page
"Contributing to the Kerry-Edwards 2004 General Election Legal and Accounting Compliance Fund (GELAC) provides important support for our campaign. The Federal Election Commission has just granted our request to raise funds now to cover recount expenses. Your contribution to Kerry-Edwards 2004 GELAC will provide the resources to make sure we are prepared to win the post election day battles.
In addition to recount costs, GELAC helps pay for legal and accounting expenses incurred by the campaign. By paying for these expenses with GELAC funds, the campaign is able to spend more of its limited public funds on critical campaign expenses such as media, candidate travel and direct contact with voters."

I bolded the word "now" because that's how it appears on their site. didn't find an "updated as of" notation on the page, or in the source code.

Very interesting, indeed.

16. It was worded like that from before election day
I put money into that fund and remember it. I also donated on election night at around 2am because I thought we were getting ready for battle. The wording and the link has been there for awhile now.

9. sent them an email
We were just wondering...is the Contribute link on your home page new? Or is this old news?

We - those who voted for you - are anxious to fund all of the recounts that are taking place, but don't want to send any money to you if you are not actually involved in the recounts.

Could you clear up for us exactly what you are doing?

Thanks.

17. No link to the $15 million returned
But there was a big stink about it yesterday, and he did turn it over to the DNC or other Dems for their campaigns.

It's probably in the yahoo archives if you want to search; I've got to go, otherwise I'd look for it.

We have 45 million in the offical fund for election day Problems.
and the campaign has 15 million left over. I have been told some of the 45 million is already being spent on Lawyers from the campaign in at least Ohio and Florida.
