Why has Accupoll pulled out of PA? Anyone have an idea?

Thursday, January 26, 2006

Union County is back to square one in voting machine adventure

by Mike Tischio, Staff writer

LEWISBURG — The Union County Commissioners were left holding an empty bag on Monday as the UNISYS Company, which makes the AccuPoll voting machine the county was set to buy, decided not to sell AccuPoll in Pennsylvania.

“We are now facing federal, and more importantly, state guidlines to use electronic voting machines in the spring primaries,” said commissioner John Showers. “A decision has to be made soon.”

1. So Diebold is back - with printer to be purchased later if we have money?
Sounds about right.

2. Actually, they've denied Diebold's VVPAT because it's a "roll".

They want the VVPAT randomized (which isn't unreasonable, but I'd prefer non-randomized paper to no paper at all).

3. What is wrong with the Venezuelan method of two receipts with one
put into a box for an audit trail.

Why the hell "randomized" if the process means tearing off and putting into a box with no ID on paper.

4. Without (for now) addressing the Venezualan model...
...note that there isn't a VVPAT option, regardless of manu. or specific design, certified for use in PA.

Also, I don't know that tearing off and putting into a box precludes ID on paper.

5. tear off paper has vote recorded - and a ID only if one puts it there
rather similiar to secret ballot!

:toast:

6. The article has been updated.

When questioned as to the reasons for the UNISYS decision to pull AccuPoll, he could only speculate that, “maybe they didn’t have enough sales in Pennsylvania to support continuing attempts.”
