Does anyone know why so few turned out on the 6th?
I was surprised that so few turned up with so many organizations pushing it. Was it because it was a weekday, or people are split between 6th and 20th? Anyone hear why the turnout was low?

1. Blizzards? Airports slowed to a crawl? Weather was sorta nasty at hubs.
Trying to keep bosses happy so they don't end up unemployed before the regularly scheduled lay-offs?

2. People are discouraged. They don't have a party to fight for.
The numbers everywhere are low. Even the J20s will likely be a lot smaller than four years ago.

4. This shouldn't be a partisan issue, though. It's an American issue, and
wee need to reach out to as many people as possible about it.

No, the Bu$histas won't sign on, but there _are_ conservatives out there who are also upset with the way our election system works and can see that there is value in revamping it.

3. Do you have any idea of the estimated
number of people there? I saw a few pix, and read Will's account, but haven't seen much else other than watching C-Span yesterday. And here, but not many first-hand accounts. Thanks!

7. It was about 200 at the PDA rally and I would guess 500+ at
the big one. I wasn't in a good position to estimate the big one. It is a big area, could have been 1,000 or so and it wouldn't look like it unless you had a good vantage point.

10. Maybe baby steps?
But it could have been worse! Hopefully the 20th will prove to be more successful. Maybe the media might get a clue if lots more people show up, like last summer during the RNC!

12. Some who were there estimated 1500-2000 at the latter rally
and 500 at the earlier rally. The media, of course, said there were only 200, period.

Any estimates from the organizers?

15. I could directly see 500 or so at the big one -- couldn't see it all from
where I was in the crowd. There weren't that many at the smaller one, at least all at once.

Part of the problem w/ the larger one was it started thinning out very quickly.

I haven't seen any official estimates from organizers.

6. Holidays, family, fatigue. And remember, the numbers are never
reported accurately. I don't know why. But after so many years, I always look at the number and start multiplying by 1.5 fwiw, Beth

9. I ran an information company at one point and found that people almost
always underestimate crowds. We'd have conferences and the trade press would say about half of the real number showed up. We knew the real numbers because we had the registration lists. It's easy to undercount heads in crowds.

11. Is that how it happens? I'm hopeless at counting heads. I know
I was at huge protests in Los Angeles prewar that were 'way undercounted.

14. I don't know why it's always an undercount, but it seems to always
work that way.

8. Good for Rethugs in Florida
Edited on Fri Jan-07-05 08:41 PM by adolfo
Over in Baker county there were many (332% more than registered Republicans in one precinct) that voted for Bush.

Baker:

Fortunately, Volusia or Orange wasn't that bad.

The RNC was scheduled months in advance, and it was in NYC. Anway yesterday's turnout was better than 2000!
