A girl is to become Britain's youngest mother after becoming pregnant at 11.

The girl smokes 20 cigarettes a day despite being eight months' pregnant. She conceived aged 11 when she lost her virginity to a boy of 15 on a drunken night out with friends.

The 15-year-old has since been charged with rape by police, and is due to appear again at Edinburgh sheriff court on July 10.

Her 34-year-old mother, who gave birth to her youngest child eight months ago, said she was 'proud' of her daughter.

although the situation is more serious for a girl, since she's now pregnant, and too ignorant to bring up a child well (she thinks smoking while pregnant can't be having any effect on the baby). She's suffering physically as well as psychologically, and the baby may be too.

though getting a very young girl pregnant does have more damaging consequences than turning a very young boy into a father. Both have serious social, economic and educational consequences, but the first has far more serious PHYSICAL consequences to both the child-parent and the baby.

I don't think that the boy should be punished as severely as a 40-year-old man who forces himself on an underage girl; but I think he has broken the law, and should be charged. As I would say about a girl in such a case.

I tend to doubt anything published in the Daily Mail, but I suspect that this story is true. If so, then it's a truly tragic case; and while I don't go for 'blaming the parents for everything', I do think that the girl's mother must have been quite negligent if such a young child was able to go around drinking, having unprotected sex, and now smoking while pregnant.

I just hope the baby will be all right, physically and psychologically. Adoption would be by far the best solution IMO.
