Any other politics geeks staying up to watch the results?
The B.B.C. are listing ten councils already - I'm guessing that these are cases of partial election where a change of power is not mathematically possible.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/uk_politics/2006/election_2006/default.stm

Labour hold 5:
Knowsley,
Rotherham,
Stevenage,
Sunderland,
Tameside.

Conservative hold 4:
Broxbourne,
Daventry,
Rochford,
Runnymede.

LibDems hold 1:
Watford.

Had trouble waking up before noon even when I've slept all night. Staying up for election results couldn't hurt.

Maybe we should add a link thread in GD. In fact, I'm off to do that now

God what a bunch of naked tories. The only consolation is the local anchor Henson is almost in tears because Labour has wiped the floor with the opposition in Manchester. Earlier this evening he was predicting the resurgence of tories and getting at least one councillor in Manchester.

More tory spin on the rest of the region.

btw BNP gained another seat in Pendle. :puke:

28. Labour have lost their last two remaining seats in Adur to the Tories
This is my local council. It is a great shame as they were both good Old Labour councillors who had represented their wards for years. They were victims of the governments unpopularity. There really is not much of the Labour grassroots left round here.

God I hate Blair. He has wrought more damage on the Labour movement than Thatcher.

With Tories gaining about the same, and most others staying about the same. Extend than to about 4,400 seats, they'd lose between 250 and 300.

40. Lab & Con both lost 2 seats
Lib Dem and 'other' (presumably England First) each gained 2, according to BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/vote2006/locals/html/ex.stm .

I've had a shower after looking at the England First party site - they also stood in 2004. It looks like a few BNP rejects (they proudly claim to have been 'proscribed' by the BNP), but the BNP failed to put up a valid (legal?) candidate in the seats. They are just as objectionable as the BNP - maybe even more so.

Personally I think the conservatives have done really poorly, this is before the London results have come in. This doesn't mean that Blair should be let off the hook - he and all the other crypto-thatcherite slimeballs are to blame for the results of the BNP.

UKIP has held onto their seat  so I suppose it could be considered good for them.

I also think Ming the Meerciless has hit the Lib Dems.

Labour lost 4 seats; Lib Dem gained 2; Greens gained 1; Others (presumably Independent Working Class) have gained 1. The Council is even more closely divided between Lib Dem and Labour, and there are 8 Greens out of 48 Councillors; and still no Tories.
