Poll question: Okay BC duers how are you voting?
Edited on Wed May-11-05 02:44 PM by HEyHEY
I'm going Liberal and for STV.

Why? I truly feel both sides in this dispute are full of shit. So I'm basing my vote on local politics. Bill Barisoff, my riding... is a good and honest man. That being said so is Garry Litke, but he's taken cheap shots at the Greens and Barisoff. Niether of them have done that back.
As well, I still can't forgive the NDP just yet. I would vote Green, but my green guy is kinda useless.
But in my opinion the NDP and Libs have a fairly similiar platform and the Liberals seem to have the ability to make it work. I doubt the NDP would undo much the Liberals have already done... wether they admit it or not.

I should add, I'm also pro STV because I AM SICK to DEATH of having to vote either for union or for big business.... that is a shallow summary though.

2. Don't you know that it's a secret ballot?
Edited on Wed May-11-05 10:36 PM by V. Kid
I think you know how I'm voting, btw I'm for electoral reform so...hint...hint.

Oh, btw, the Union vs Big Buisness dichotamy in politics won't change with the Liberals in power, even if STV passes. They aren't going to change the way campaigns are financed, so therefore the politicians will still be taking money from those groups, and therefore still be shilling for them. It's one thing to have an ideological prefrence, it's another to be purchased. And considering the complete lack of movement by the Liberals on the issue, your hope isn't going to come to fruition. (BTW the NDP and Greens are proposing to ban union and corporate donations...and I'm pretty sure so-called "third party" advertisements would be included).

Untrue, you can't predict what manner of parties would form or what the dynamic of the final outcome would be. The main thing it would accomplish is giving parties like the Libs and NDP stiffer competition in the leg, hence they would have to stop toadying to their respective groups.

I know for a fact STV will fail, but that doesn't mean I'm not voting for it

4. I think I can if...

...I can follow the money. It's something that all politicians do. If there was campaign finance reform I'd agree with you; however, since the Liberals will probably win the election, there won't be any campaign finance reform. Political Parties need money to operate, and if they do whatever their donors or third party allies say then they'll get the money if not then not, so I don't think that the importance of this can be denied. BTW incase it wasn't clear I'm voting for STV..I was joking about the secret ballot thing....

6. Yeah, sounds intresting....
...I'd hope that money doesn't skew the process though. This is a big concern for me as you can see. I'd think it's best that various sides of an issue that came out of a citizen's assembly should get relativley equal time. I'd be worried that a very large number of people wouldn't be informed, but maybe this sort of thing would jolt them to actually find out where they stand on the issues, and find out the facts about the issues and consquences of their decisions.
